The boys basketball championship game of the ACAC tournament took place Saturday, January 12 between visiting Woodlan and home, Bluffton. The last time the Warriors had been to the Coliseum for the ACAC tournament was 16 years ago in 1997.
Woodlan won the tip-off and was the first to score, but that didn’t stop the Tigers from taking control of the game early, outscoring the Warriors 2-1 finishing the first half 30-15.
The second half a different team came out on the floor for the Warriors. The boys scored almost as many points in the third quarter as they scored in both the first and second quarters. The fourth quarter was fabulous, scoring 30 points, more than doubling the third quarter points.
Junior Kadin Gerig nailed 7 three-point baskets in the game with 5 of them in the fourth quarter alone (23 total) and giving him the title of top scorer of the ACAC game. Shawn McGettigan scored 13, Loren Hahn scored 10, Greg White had 5; Joe Lortie, Luke Mendenhall, and Caleb Stieglitz each had 2, and Contrell Burden scored 1 free-throw.
The momentum swung to Woodlan in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to save them from the deficit in the first half and they lost 66-58. The Warriors scored 15 points the first half and 43 points the second half. The Tigers scored 30 points the first half and 36 points the second. Coach Randall said, “I’m proud of my kids. My kids did not quit and that’s what you want out of kids. My hat’s off to Bluffton, they played a better game.”
Woodlan also brought home the Sportmanship award trophy.
