Phyllis Joan Ruble Pond, 82, of New Haven went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 22, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Born on October 25, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Clifford and Rosa Ruble. She grew up on a farm northeast of Warren, IN. She graduated from Warren High School in 1948, Ball State University in 1951, and Indiana University Education in 1963. She taught school in Eaton, Raleigh and Plymouth. She then taught Kindergarten for 37 years at New Haven Elementary School, before retiring in 1998. She was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1978 and retired her legislative seat of 35 years in October 2013. During her time in office, she was bestowed the state’s highest award, The Sagmore of the Wabash on November 2, 1984 by Governor Robert Orr. She was a Girl Scout leader, 4-H leader and Cub Scout den mother. Phyllis was also a longtime member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, New Haven.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, George; children, Douglas Pond of Indianapolis, Dr. William (Cami) Pond of Fort Wayne, and Jean Grasmick of Zionsville; grandchildren, Greg and Scott Pond, Joel Aiken, and Jennifer (Jon) Knepp; and great grandchildren, Beatrice, Walker, and Eleanore. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Robert Ruble.
Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 27, 2013 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, 800 Green St., New Haven with calling from 9 to 10 a.m. prior. Rev. Scott Zeckzer officiating. Calling is also 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the church. Burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Warren. Preferred memorials are to Emanuel Lutheran Church or Pulmonary Fibrosis Association. Arrangements by E. Harper & Son Funeral Home, 740 St. Rd. 930 E., New Haven.
