Report of the Building Principals:

Payne Elementary Principal’s Report for December – Jody Dunham:

1. Building Updates;

1. Security Updates

a. All classrooms have been provided “Go Buckets” as recommended by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Department. These buckets contain supplies to be used in the event of a lockdown emergency.

b. We are moving forward with the installation of 3M Silver Security Film on our glass entry ways. Also, various security systems will be added or updated within the building.

c. We are in the process of determining prioritized needs for additional cameras.

2. We have received the results of the fall 2013 Third Grade Reading Ohio Achievement Assessment. This assessment was administered to students on October 8, 2013. We are excited to announce that after only 7 weeks of third grade reading instruction, 61% of our third grade students met or exceeded the minimum score as set by the state. The remaining 39% of the students will have an opportunity to take the test again in the spring. Those students will continue to receive targeted instruction and intervention from our teachers and instructional tutors.

3. Teachers are preparing vertical curriculum alignment materials to bring to the January 16 two hour delay in-service. This professional development will provide teachers an opportunity to collaborate with teachers who teach one grade level above and below them.

4. Students in Grades 4, 5, and 6 will participate in an On-Site Field Trip on December 10. Students will be engineers and learn about simple machines and their real life applications. They will use LEGO kits to build a race car utilizing gears, wheels and axle, and motor. They will race the cars relay style, return to discuss concepts of speed variance (weight, aerodynamics, horsepower), and time permitting, modify their car for a second race.

5. In January, the Payne Ministerial Association and Payne Elementary will team to provide “Kidzone” to our students. This is an afterschool program for students K-6 that will provide character development opportunities. Kidzone will meet every other week throughout the school year.

6. A pie selling contest was added to our Market Day sales for November. Our students sold 254 pies for a profit of over $1,200 that will be used to fund field trips and assemblies. The top 2 sales people were rewarded by throwing a pie in my face. The top 15 sales people were treated with a pizza party.

7. The PTO provided a Santa’s Workshop for our students the week of December 2. Students were given opportunities to shop for their friends and families at this child friendly store.

8. The sixth grade class enjoyed their field trip to Fort Wayne on December 9. They went to the St. Francis Planetarium for the “Star of Bethlehem” show, the Historical Society for the Festival of the Gingerbread and Headwaters Park to ice skate.

9. Our annual Christmas program is scheduled for Friday, December 13. Performances will be at 9:30 and 1:30. Everyone is invited to join us for this celebration.

10. On December 20 at 9:30, we will be playing our annual benefit basketball game. Proceeds provide local families with hygiene and cleaning products.

11. The WTPE building level Spelling Bee is scheduled for January 8, 2014 at 1:30.

12. Students in Mrs. Moran’s class are learning the life skill of how to compare numbers when shopping. They have participated in walking field trips to the Payne SuperValue and Dollar General stores.

Grover Hill Elementary Principal’s Report – Kevin Wilson’s Report:

Maintenance – During the last board meeting you had asked about the age and warranty of our existing roof. After speaking to Gregg I found that the warranty for the 1983 section ran out in 2003 and the new addition expires in 2024. The warranty does not cover cleaning and painting but does cover repairs. At this time I have asked Gregg to make another attempt to contact those companies who have been out to look at the roof, but did not send back a quote.

During out EPA report there we a two items that needed addressed. The first item was the dirt around the well. In the EPA report it stated that since we did not have grass around our well we needed to add mulch. This task has been completed and now all we are waiting for is the clear tank for our peroxide water system. Other than this one item we have made all corrections needed.

Also, I want to update you on our Health Department report. At this time everything has been taken care of with the exception of the water fountains in the gym area. Gregg has the parts ordered and when they arrive he will have them fixed. So, as for this report we have taken care of the storage area along with the sinks and drains to complete the correction from the Health Department report.

After receiving the quote to build a storage building I contacted Taylor Brothers and for right now I have rented one of their storage areas. This should take care of most of our items, but it will not fix snow blower storage issue. After working with Mr. Arnold on this issue he has given permission to purchase a 10 x 12 building with a loft. This will permit us to move the snow blower and several other items into this building. Any item that will not fit in the building will either be taken to recycle or sold. Gregg and I have talked and feel that maybe a garage sale would be a great way to rid our building of the many TV carts, desk and metal cabinets that are stored all over the building. At this time we are looking at the items to see what we should attempt to sell and what we need to recycle.

Academics – Earlier this year our third grade students took the fall OAA Reading assessment. Last week the results were made available. At Grover Hill we had 37 students take this test and 21 scored proficient or higher. The remaining 16 students did not make the score of 400 and so they will be retaking the OAA Reading test this spring. We will be sending letters home to the parents of those who did not score proficient to inform them of what changes we have made to assist their child in becoming proficient. Starting this year the Third Grade Guarantee states that any student not scoring at least a 392 on the third grade OAA must be retain. At this time we have 12 students who are below the 392 mark. We will be working closely with these students and parents to do everything we can to ensure all of our third grade students reach the proficient level.

Round one of the new state evaluation process has been completed. At this time I have completed all teacher evaluations and plan to spend the next two weeks meeting with the non-certified staff to go over their first semester evaluations. This has been a long but very beneficial process for both the teachers and me. Round two will begin in January.

This year’s Christmas program “Lights, Camera, Christmas” will be presented on Tuesday, December 10. We will have two performances, the first being a matinée at 1:30 p.m. followed by a 7:00 p.m. evening performance. Mrs. Wieland and her students have worked hard to put this program together and I know the community will enjoy “Lights, Camera, and Christmas”.

On Thursday, December 12 we will have Mobile Education Productions here to present a program called “Stronger than a bully”. This is a quality program and something all students need. At 1:00 p.m. we will invite our K-3 grade students to the gym for their program and then at 2:00 p.m. we will have the program for grades 4-6.

Classroom Spotlight – This month the classroom spotlight is on Mrs. Davis’ sixth grade class. The students have been learning about the Ancient Egyptian gods and goddesses. This is a lesson taught by sixth grade Social Studies teachers throughout the state, but Mrs. Davis includes a technology lesson along with her Social Studies lessons. During November Mrs. Davis’s students worked on researching the Ancient Egyptians and during this lesson they were introduced to “Symbaloo”. Symbaloo is a program students use to list all of the web sites they used during the research project. Then, as the students present their report they used “Prezi”, a power point style program. As you can see, Mrs. Davis includes technology with all her lessons.

One bit of information that I promised to pass along is that the Symbaloo idea was given to Mrs. Davis by Mrs. Baker.

Other – The staff at GH and I would like to thank two outstanding organizations for their generosity. First, we would like to thank the Grover Hill Ministerial Association for their generous donation to pay school fees for those families who need assistance. The total amount donated by the Grover Hill Ministerial Association was $1,025. At this time all but three families have paid their fees. Next, I need to thank the Grover Hill PTO for the purchase of a new laminator. Our old laminator was around 20 years old and needed to be replaced.

Jr./Sr. High School Principal’s Report – Greg Leeth:

1. Several cosmetic improvements have occurred at the junior and senior high school in weeks since the last board meeting. Most notably, the trophy case in the cafeteria has been completely rebuilt. I want to thank Mr. Langhals for coordinating the work and Ken Speice and Tim Dunlap for prepping the area for the work. Mr. Speice and his custodial crew put in many hours taking out doors, painting door jambs and walls, and tearing off the brown vinyl baseboard.

Other significant improvements include replacing the gym and locker room entry doors and the PE storage doors. Blue baseboard has been installed, replacing the brown in the cafeteria and gym areas; and vinyl lettering spelling out “Raider Nation” has been added to the gym wall near the student cheering section. Additionally, words such as integrity, respect, believe, have been added above classroom doors.

2. The Wayne Trace High School National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony on November 27. The following students are now members: Senior – Austin Conlon. Juniors – Hunter Martin, Sarah Young, Jehane Hoagland, Hank Sinn, Blair Baumle, Cassidy Hilkey, Jacob Arend, Erin Jewell, Kayla Zuber, Jacob Dingus, Rebecca Hamrick, Addison Baumle, and James Weaver.

I want to than Ms. Joni Klopfenstein and Mrs. Heather Hatcher for their work organizing and conducting the ceremony.

3. Danielle Miles, Kayla Thompson, and Alex Winebrenner have been selected for membership in the Vantage Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society. A banquet will be held December 10 at 6:30 in the Vantage cafeteria to honor those students.

4. Seventy-four junior high students attended a movie, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, at the Van Wert Cinema with Mr. Langhals on November 27. Students earned the reward for meeting the following criteria: no F’s, no discipline referrals, no tardies, and no “failure is not an option” referrals.

5. During a recent visit to one of Mr. Miller’s Math 7 classes, I observed students applying what they learn in class to real world tasks. The Content Standard under the Geometry Domain from Ohio’s New Learning Standards states: [students should be able to] solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, such as computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.

Mr. Miller had students prepare an estimate for painting one wall in his classroom. Students were required to draw the wall (including pictures, whiteboards, etc.) to scale, label the drawing appropriately, determine the net square feet of the wall, and estimate the number of gallons of paint and the cost to paint the wall.

Students worked in groups and submitted “bids” for the work to him, the buyer. He awarded the contract to a group who came within five dollars of the actual cost.

6. I would be remiss if I did not mention that school spirit is high; yet students and teachers have taken care of the business of teaching and learning. It would be easy to not take school seriously right now with all of the excitement surrounding the football playoffs. I am proud of the staff and students for keeping focus.

Additionally, I want to commend the football team and coaches, cheerleaders and coaches, marching band and directors, and entire student body for making the Wayne Trace community proud!
