Life-long New Haven resident Brian Knott said he has often thought of holding a day-long benefit out of his shop, Brian’s Barbershop on Broadway.

The problem was, he never knew what charity he wanted support.

That all changed, Knott said, one October when he saw a random Facebook post about one of his former friends and New Haven High School classmates, Justin Herman. Herman and his wife Elise launched a 501 (c) (3) foundation in 2009 called Super Cooper’s Little Red Wagon in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (the family’s current home). The family was inspired to create the foundation that helps fill the housing gap for families of children receiving brain cancer-specific treatment after their own son, Cooper Herman, was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer at age 2.

The Herman’s found that they were incredibly blessed by their own support network of family, employers, and health insurance, Justin’s mother, Sandra Herman, said in an interview in New Haven on January 8th, 2014. The family quickly found out, however, that while they were blessed, many of the other families they met were not so lucky. Many families were forced to live out of their cars, in pediatric ICU waiting rooms, or in their child’s hospital rooms because they had no other options available. From this observation, the Herman family decided to form Super Cooper’s Little Red Wagon Foundation so that the fight against childhood cancer could be a little more hospitable for the families of the children during their treatment.

Knott decided he would pick a Saturday to dedicate the proceeds from all the haircuts at Brian’s Barbershop to the Super Cooper’s Little Red Wagon Foundation. He thought interest from the community might generate a few hundred dollars in proceeds for the foundation, said Knott.
