The New Haven boys came off of their 65-49 win against Concordia on Friday, March 7, while Bishop Dwenger won against Leo 62-47. Both came to the championship game ready for a difficult match. Previously in the season the Bulldogs defeated the Saints 63-48 during regular season play.
Early in the game New Haven took the lead and finished the first quarter 17-12. The lead would last only a short while while Dwenger scored more points in the second quarter. Steve McElvene helped out underneath the basket, but the fouls built up against him made the coach pull him out. The first half finished very close with the Bulldogs on top 26-22. The calls made by the refs were questioned but to no avail. Free throw points were not a major part of their normal repertoire for the Bulldogs on this night.
The second half Dwenger was top dog even with Jordan Hogue having a good night. New Haven’s wings were clipped in both quarters. Never able to recover, they were only able to score 7 points each while the Saints added 28. The final score finished 40 – 50 with Bishop Dwenger moving to Regionals.
The Bulldogs finished a fantastic season at 19-4. The Saints are currently 15-8.
