Delane “Smitty” Schmidt, 79, of Payne, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014 at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice Center.
Delane was born in Dixon, Ohio on July 30, 1934, a son of the late Luella (Shaffer) and Albie Schmidt.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. Delane retired in 1996 as machine repairman at Chrysler Corp; was a member of Divine Mercy Catholic Parish; Payne American Legion & Amvets and Van Wert VFW Post.
On Feb. 7, 1959 he married Donnie Lumsden.
He will be sadly missed by his wife, Donnie; son, Bruce Eugene (Brenda) of Payne; siblings, Lloyd (Joanie) of Montrose, CO, Theresa (John) Grutsch of Fort Wayne & Darlene (Charles) Boettler of Lakewood, CO; 5 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren.
Delane was also preceded in death by his son Edward Joseph & brother, Lewis.
Viewing is Monday 4-7:30 pm, with the rosary recited at 7:30 pm at Dooley Funeral Home, 5761 SR 500, Payne, where viewing is also, Tuesday 9-9:30 am.
His Funeral Mass is at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Payne, at 10 am on Tuesday, March 18th.
Delane will be laid to rest at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
