Grover Hill Elementary Principal Report – Kevin Wilson:
Maintenance:
Gregg and I are looking at a five year plan for the WTGH building. Items we feel are needed as parts of our improvement plan are:
• Repair of the Elevator
*We received an “Elevator Violation Notice” after our inspection last week.
*The elevator has never been used by a student or teacher and to our knowledge the only time it has ever been ran is during the inspection
• Tile in the kitchen need to be replaced over this summer
• Playground needs more “mulch” to fill in the low spots
• Painting of the hallways and restrooms
• New bathroom partitions are beginning to and will need replaced
• The downspouts have wholes in and need to be repaired for now, but at some point they will need to be replaced
• The snow blower is rusting and the belt continues to fall off. We will need to look at replacing the snow blower soon.
• This year twice we have had electrical issue that could have canceled school. Gregg and I would like to see the generator hooked up to run the entire GH building.
• The roof over the 83 section will need to be repaired/repainted within the next two to three years.
*We still are unable to find the source of our leaks. They seem to be somewhere different each time it rains.
Academics:
All Evaluations have been completed using the new OTES process. During my final evaluation meetings with the staff we discussed the process along with the effectiveness of the process. At this time I feel very confident in saying that most of the teachers felt this process was very helpful in defining areas for growth and improvement.
During the month of May all teachers in grades K–3 will be busy with the end of the year diagnostic assessments. At the completion of these diagnostic assessments our teacher will have a good idea of how much growth the students have made this year.
On Saturday April 12, 26, and May 3 we held OAA review sessions at WTGH. Over the course of the three Saturdays we had anywhere from 50 to 60 students attend.
The Grover Hill team came in second place during the Paulding County Battle of the Books. This was a great experience for our students. After watching the Battle of the Books in grades 5 and 6 I am speaking with our 1–4 teachers about having an in-house battle of the books.
Kindergarten screening was held April 23-24. During the screening process we had 41 students attend. I am now in the process of finalizing the data and contacting the parent to set up a meeting to discuss the screening results.
On May 13 at 1:30 and again at 7:00 our 1st-3rd grade students will be presenting their Spring Musical. Mrs. Wieland and her classes have been working hard on this program and I know it will be an outstanding program.
May 20 at 7:00 our elementary bands will be performing at the high school. On this night the elementary bands will play and then the junior high and high school bands will perform.
The final quarter reward for the year is on May 22nd. For this final reward we will be taking those students who qualify to the YMCA in Van Wert.
May is the month of field trips. The field trip schedule for WTGH students is:
• May 16
*Preschool and kindergarten will be going to the Fort Wayne Zoo
*Second grade classes are going to Stone Co.
• May 20
*Grade 4, 5, & 6 will be going to Fort Wayne Botanical Gardens
• May 23
*First Grade will be going to Spangler Candies in Bryan
During the month of May we also have many awards ceremonies. The dates are:

• May 29 at 9:30 is the assembly for grades 1-3
• May 29 at 1:00 is the assembly for grades 4-6

1. I want to thank Mrs. Gudakunst, Mr. Speller, and the many parents who chaperoned the 8th grade Washington D.C. trip the week of April 28. Mrs. Gudakunst reported that the students were well behaved and she received many compliments regarding the group’s behavior. The last hour of the in-service was spent working in collaborative groups sharing resources, web sites, and ideas for incorporating technology in the classroom.
4. Ms. Heiby and several students recently attended the State FFA convention. Matthew Klopfenstein won Star State in Agribusiness and was elected State FFA Treasurer.
