Van Wert – The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at 12:20 P. M. Monday afternoon on US 127 near Walnut Grove Church Road, York Township, in Van Wert County. The crash was approximately six miles south of the city of Van Wert.
A 2012 Freightliner Semi driven by Ben A. Bernard, age 69, of Zanesville, Ohio was southbound on US 127. A 2002 Buick driven by Carole B. Dunaway, age 76, of Centerville, Ohio was northbound on US 127. Dunaway crossed the center line into the path of the Freightliner and struck it head on.
Dunaway was pronounced dead on scene by the Van Wert County Coroner and she was transported to the Lucas County Coroner’s Office by Brickner EMS. The driver of the Freightliner was transported to Van Wert County Hospital by EMS and treated for minor injuries.
The Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Ohio City Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, Brickner EMS, Van Wert County Coroner and Van Wert Sheriff’s Office.
The crash is still under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash. Seat belts were in use.
