Adams Central dominated the first part of the game looking like there was no hope left for the Warriors on Friday, October 17. The game took place on the Etzler Field. The warm winds brought rain and soon the strong breeze was much cooler.
Last year the Warriors went to the Jets’ field and Woodlan performed well, winning 28-7. 2014 was different. AC struck first and scored the first TD. Woodlan responded two minutes later with a touchdown by Mitchell VanBrocklin and a successful kick by Quentin Graber, taking the lead by 1 point. The Jets went on a 3 touchdown scoring spree and guest fans were ecstatic when the score was 26-7 after a home team fumble. Was Woodlan in a free fall?
The tide began to change when Shawn Kitzmiller ran a 47 yard touchdown with three and a half minutes left in the first half. With :55 left Adams Central has the ball down on the Warrior side of the field with Andrew Hammond passing, the ball is intercepted by Woodlan’s Herm Rorick who runs the ball through the Jets offense and adding another touchdown finishing the half with a score of 26-20 and a nervous Adams Central team in the lead.
The eight minutes left in the third quarter and the Jets score again but the two point conversion is no good, being a deciding factor in the game. VanBrockling posts another 6 points for the home team and Graber adds the point after narrowing the Jets lead to 32-27.
Since the game was drawing to an end and the Jets were in the lead the Warriors had to do something. The ball was on the one yard line and VanBrocklin once again dove in for the six points. The two point conversion from Rick Ehle to Kitzmiller was broken up. With nine minutes left on the clock the Woodlan defense pulled out all the stops to ensure the Jets would not invade the goal, and successfully the
Warriors achieved that, pulling off the win 32-33. Two years in a row now Woodlan, now 6-3, wins against the Adams County team.
Total offensive yardage: Adams Central 374 on 47 plays; Woodlan 334 on 53 plays.
