In November 2013, the St. Joseph of Lima School students, staff, parents, and community made a big move. They said goodbye to a 100-year-old school building and entered their new home, which was the former Monroeville School.
In comparison, the new home represents a castle, filled with new opportunities, a media center, a gymnasium, more room for expansion, and its very own chapel, among other new amenities. With the move, the school system became St. Rose of Lima School, home of the Archers.
A year later, the St. Rose of Lima School community has much to be thankful for. They took the opportunity to celebrate on November 25 in grand style with a day full of activities. The day began with mass where Father Dino blessed food items that would be used in family Thanksgiving meals. After mass, parents and guests enjoyed doughnuts and coffee in the school cafeteria. Next, everyone joined together to watch a slide show in the school’s media center that highlights the move from the St. Joseph School to the St. Rose School.
The rest of the day centered on Family Day, which is a day once a month where students form “families” among all grades and are grouped by specific colors. Wearing tie-dyed shirts they had made on a previous family day, each family enjoyed various activities throughout the day. A favorite activity of the day was enjoying a
Thanksgiving meal with all staff, complete with Thanksgiving favorites: turkey, noodles, mashed potatoes & gravy, fruit, and dinner roll.
While the school community gave thanks for many things, they also focused on giving. Students provided nonperishable food items to donate to the local food pantry. They also made ornaments for the St. Rose Parish Giving Tree. Other ongoing and upcoming projects include collecting shoes for Haiti and donating items for the Hope Clinic in Decatur, IN.
These are just a few examples of the way St. Rose School offers Thanks and Giving. On a daily basis, the school strives to honor its motto: “We Build Saints and Academic Excellence.” To learn more about St. Rose of Lima School, visit http://strosemonroeville.org/ or call 260-623-3447.
