Close Game Raiders and Aces

The highly anticipated conference boys basketball game between Hicksville and Wayne Trace took place at the Aces home court on Friday, February 6, both coming in with excellent records for this season. Hicksville has won the last three games while the Raiders are on a seven game winning streak.

The Raiders took an early lead in the first quarter and doubled the points of the opponents. It looked like this game might be easier for the guests than anticipated. The Aces rallied after coach Tony Tear got the message through to his team—”We are better than this!” The second quarter would not be the same. Led by Jonny Giesige and his three point baskets, Hicksville outscored the Raiders and the half ended only three points different at 27-24 and the Raiders holding the one shot lead.

This game brought people from all over the area. The Hicksville gymnasium was at full capacity and people were parked way out at the road just to watch these top teams compete.

Wayne Trace came up in the third quarter and accelerated the game once again and expanded their lead in points and with Corbin Linder and Luke Miller leading in three point baskets. Several turnovers for the Raiders brought the Aces back in the game with Garrett Crall and his free-throws and jumpshots.

The fourth quarter increased the energy and both teams posted their best quarters. The writing was on the wall as the Blue Creek team inched ahead, the clock ticked down and they didn’t look back in the last minute. The final score was 62-51 with the Raiders winning the game. They are now one step closer to taking the GMC Title for the 2014-2015 basketball season.

The Lady Aces travelled to Wayne Trace on the below zero evening of Thursday, February 5th. The girls basketball game began the evening with the JV game win going to the home team.

Wayne Trace’s Danae Myers grabbed the varsity tip-off against Addison Bergman and so began the game against Hicksville. Sometimes the play was a little sloppy for the Lady Aces and gave the Raiders an advantage in the first half. Over the past few games the Lady Raiders have really pulled together tightening their team play.

This has been the highest scoring game for Wayne Trace at 72 points total. Erin Mohr and Shayna Temple were competing as point leaders throughout. Mohr racked up 27 points: 12 from 3 point baskets and 12 from 2 point field goals. The other three from free throws and this was her second best game yet, one point short from the Fairview matchup. Temple, on the other hand, had her best game and not far behind Mohr. She posted 6 points from three point baskets, 12 from 2-point shots, and 5 from free throws, all adding up to 23 for the evening.

The Aces could not match the speed of the Lady Raiders. They have been a good team and had a better record coming in to this game than the home team. For some reason the turnovers were just getting out of control. All four quarters, from beginning to end, fell below the competition.

Addison Bergman nailed 18 points for the Route 49 team. Most of her points, 14 to be exact, came from two points shots, 4 came from the foul line.

From beginning to end the game didn’t change much. The momentum stayed consistently with the home team. At 72-50, the game added a win the Raider record. Wayne Trace is now 11-6, Hicksville is now 11-8.

Score by the Quarter:
Wayne Trace: 16 22 16 18 = 72
Hicksville: 11 14 14 11 = 50

Scorers of the Game:
Wayne Trace: Mohr 27; Temple 23; Myers 12; Gudakunst 8; Sinn 2
Hicksville: Berman 18; Berenyi 9; Taylor 9; Schroeder 7; Demland 4; Slattery 3
