The Antwerp High School wrestling team recently competed at the District Tournament in Fostoria on March 6-7, 2015. Of the 3 wrestlers who qualified, 2 of them won at least 1 match and 1 was able to place in the top 5 of his respective weight class. Sophomore Logan Shaner was 1-2 on the weekend with his 1 win coming by way of pin. Logan finishes his season with 31 wins, 15 losses, and 24 pins. This is a vast improvement from his freshman season last year. Logan had a successful season and we wish him the best as he prepares to improve that record next year.
Also competing in the first district tournament of his career was senior Jordan Laker at 285 pounds. Laker had a tremendous effort over the weekend, but came up short in his 2 matches. Laker had a tremendous year in his final season as an archer. For the first time in his career, he was able to post a winning record along with a career high in pins for a season. He finishes his senior season with 25 wins, 16 losses, and 17 pins. For Laker’s Antwerp wrestling career he won 54 matches to go along with 66 losses and 40 pins over his 4 year career.
The final Archer to compete at Districts was senior Jarett Bute at 220 pounds. For the weekend, Bute posted a 4-2 record with 1 pin and a 5th place finish. By finishing 5th, Bute secured an alternate spot for next week’s state tournament in Columbus, the highest finish of his career at the District tournament. If any of the top 4 placers cannot compete at the state tournament, then Bute will step in and get his shot at wrestling for a state title. Bute’s season and career have been one for the record books at Antwerp. In his senior season, Bute accumulated 40 wins to go with only 5 losses and 20 pins. His 40 wins are the most in a season by any Archer wrestler. For his career, he has amassed 97 wins, 40 losses and 48 pins. He is the all-time leader in career wins as well as pins at Antwerp.
Coach had these final remarks about the season,
“Everyone in the Antwerp wrestling community congratulates all of the wrestlers for their valiant effort over the weekend. We wish Jordan and Jarett the best in all of their future endeavors as they close their wrestling careers at Antwerp. Their dedication and hard work is something that all of the young Archer wrestlers can look up to and their leadership both on and off the mat will be missed in the years to come.”
