Every time I am having a bad day and want to talk about it, someone says…”Oh you have no reason to be depressed, look at all the people who have it worse than you.” Is it me or is this just the worst advice ever? Seriously, Miss C…if this is the best support I can get from my “friends”, then I may as well just talk to myself! Is this ‘advice’ really supposed to make me feel better?

Hello SuzieBlues,
It is certainly true that sometimes well intentioned words of support, are anything but. But they ARE probably well intentioned. Your friends were perhaps trying to widen your perspective. Because often, if we can step outside of ourselves for a time, the world doesn’t look like such a weary place. However, all intentions aside, here are some things to remember when the world doesn’t go quite the way you planned it:
Pain is part of growing. And there are 2 kinds of pain, the pain that hurts and the pain that changes. Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward. And that’s a good thing because we won’t move unless circumstances force us to. When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose.
Everything in life is temporary. So if things are good right now, enjoy it. If they are not so good, it won’t last forever.
Worrying and complaining changes nothing. True happiness can only come when you stop complaining about your problem and do something….or be grateful for the problems you don’t have.
Every little struggle is a step forward.
The best thing you can do is to keep going. Get back up! Keep dreaming, living life, and loving the world around you. Don’t let that bad lesson harden your heart because often times our best lessons are learned during our worst times.
And finally, Yes, life can be tough, but you are tougher.
With Blessings,
– Miss C
