This is the way the jail looked when first built and for many years thereafter.
The Paulding County Jail was recently sold to Shelly Burk Robertson of Indianapolis. Since her purchase, Shelly has been spending weekends in Paulding, working on the interior restoration of the historical building. Shelly has ties to Paulding County as she grew up in the Van Wert area and her father currently lives in Scott. She is a member of the 187 P.I. Group, which is involved with paranormal investigation and research.
Our president, Kim Sutton, went to visit with Shelly recently at the jail. “It’s quite apparent that she’s fallen in love with our historic jail and wants to keep and maintain the integrity of the building,” Kim says. “Her plans are to make a museum in the front part of the building featuring old jail history, photos, stories and memorabilia. I have offered to help Shelly in any way I can. Anyone who is willing to invest in the preservation of our county’s historic landmark should receive full support and cooperation of the local historical society.”
Shelly is asking that anyone who may have artifacts pertaining to the jail, such as old uniforms, pictures of past sheriffs, old badges, hats or other artifacts to please consider loaning them for display in the museum. If you have something you think would be a good fit for this jail museum you may call Kim Sutton at 419-399-2388.
Ms. Robertson will also be holding historic jail tours and the building will be open to other paranormal investigators as well. There will be a fee and all money raised will be used for the restoration and maintenance of the building.
