Antwerp’s 2015 Ribfest River Run 5K was well attended with 114 participants (4 of which ended up not running).
22 of the 110 who ran were in the 14 and under category (this age group continues to grow each year!).
Money raised from this event went to the Antwerp Community Development Committee and they have designated using the funds this year for the new Christmas decorations for Antwerp. (Last year it paid for the security cameras at the park after the razor blade incident).
The Ribfest River Run 5K had 10 local businesses as sponsors this year (up from seven from last year which is great!).
Next year, the committee hopes to increase these numbers by incorporating a new timing system. Each year, it has been done manually on the spot, so to be more efficient, they would like to change this if possible. This was the first year to have the start and finish at Riverside Park and it was really nice to start and finish on pavement, have the shade from the trees and have more space for everyone to hang out.
Based on positive feedback, it will likely be held at the park again in the future. Plans to include more youth age categories are being considered as the event has more young kids participating now. Currently, there is only a 14 and under and 15-18 age categories for youth. 33 of the total runners were in these two age categories this year.
Coordinator of the event, Carrie Reeb was very pleased with this year’s event, “We think it’s awesome how many people are participating in races and 5Ks now for fun. It really sends a message about getting fit, having fun while doing it and using it as a family or friends’ group activity.”
