Woodlan took on Whitko in the Sectional Championship Football game on Friday, November 6th at Warriors home field. The Wildcats were the underdog in the tournament with a less than stellar season. They made quite the impact, beating Churubusco to make it to this match.
This game was fairly equal in stats and both teams had points on the board with just a few minutes into the game.
The game was pretty straight forward with Woodlan taking charge, though not by much, from the beginning. The defense struggled in a few spots, letting the Wildcats through on a couple of plays.
Jack Rhoads, Mitchell VanBrocklin and Justin Durkes all scored touchdowns. Quentin Graber added two points from the point after kicks and Jeramiah Cassell added to the score in a two point conversion. The final score was 22-19.
Notable events in the game: Woodlan’s Donald Guerrant catches a ball after the onside kick bounces back and is recovered. In the fourth quarter, Woodlan’s Black Acosta gets called for defensive passing interference even though it was Landon Goff of Whitko who was pushing Acosta to stop the interception.
This is the first Sectional Championship Woodlan has won since 1988 and the first time they have won 12 games in sequence.
During the half time, the Woodlan band practiced their routine for their state competition they were ready to perform the next day in Indianapolis. What a recognition for all the hard work, late nights and practices all the kids endured through this season. Great job to the band for all of their achievements.
The Warriors will take on Winchester Community at the Woodlan home field on Friday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. for the Regional Final. The Golden Falcons also have an excellent record at 11-2.
