Estimated Around 8 pm at the corner of Main Street and River Street in Antwerp the Riverstreet Market, previously known as Kammeyer’s began to have smoke smolder out of what we appeared to be the bakery. After a little bit of time and lots of sirens the epic fire spread to the entire building. Smoke engulfed central part of town with a slight breeze putting the strong smoke around the Methodist Church. Around 9:10 or so it the older section in the back burst into flames. It does not appear there are injuries at this time.
Fire units from Antwerp, Payne, Cecil, Woodburn, Paulding and probably others, were there on hand to help try to put it out. The tanker trucks were dumping water into the pool to pump to the trucks, but it wasn’t enough to stop the fire.
Many people gathered around the block watching a community landmark go up in flames.
As the fire continued to blaze past 11 pm. the temperature dropped the water from the spray began to turn to ice on the parking lots and sidewalks making it dangerous for the emergency crews.
It’s great to have so many volunteer firefighters. They work hard to keep our area safe.
Please stay away from the area to keep out of the emergency worker’s way.
