Wayne Trace took an early lead in the game Thursday, January 21 against Ayersville. Both teams are tops this year, but the Raiders were in a better standing at 14-1 while the Pilots came in at 11-4. Conference standings were tied between both squads at 3-0.
Starting the second quarter with a 1 point lead, the Raiders soon lost it and gave the Lady Pilots the top spot. With a minute and a half left before halftime, Ayersville nearly doubled the lady Raiders score. It was a real struggle for the home team on this evening; much different than we’ve seen the rest of the season. A ray of sunshine changed the outlook of the Raiders in the last minute with Gracie Gudakunst making 6 points on 2-3point baskets to get the team back in the game. The half finished at 18-23 – Ayersville’s lead.
The second half was better but still couldn’t compete with the Pilots, who by the way had quite lead after they scored 25 points in the third period, more than the home team the whole second half. It wasn’t all rain showers though. Erin Mohr, who was the top scorer for Wayne Trace, has now broken the Paulding County Girls Basketball Scorer record previously held by Antwerp’s Tammy Rasey (1986) who had 1318 points. At this game against Ayersville, Erin scored 12 points and finished the game with a current career total of 1330.
The final score was 42-63 with Ayersville taking home the win and possibly the conference title.
