The Golden Bears travelled to Paulding for the Saturday night game of boys basketball. The JV game was pretty intense until the last few minutes when the boys extended their lead to by 10 points to finish the game 46-36.
The varsity game started as a close game and continued in that fashion. No dominance until the end of the second period, but even then, for the Golden Bears, it was not large. The first period ended at 13-16 when Bryan’s team was in the lead. Marcus Miller posted a 3 pointer at the beginning of the game and Alex Arellano was impressive as usual with 2 field goals and 4 free-throws.
The second period was pretty much the same for the Panthers with Corbin Doster, Preston Ingol and Arellano all adding three-point baskets. Ethan Rhonehouse also posted his first basket here too. The half finished 26-37 favoring the northern team.
I’m not sure if it was coach Shawn Brewer that lit a fire on these boys or if they just realized they had to put the truck in gear to drive forward, but it looked like a different team for the defense. Paulding was able to limit the Golden Bears to only 6 points while Corbin Edwards added 7 points on his own to the Panther’s total. The third period ended 42-43 with Bryan barely holding the lead earned in the first half.
The fourth quarter was the period when fans on both sides were screaming from the stands. Bryan was back to scoring and Paulding didn’t lose the momentum they carried over from the third period. Alex was hitting shot after shot, but not so well on foul shots. Right before the clock ran out there was a foul. The shot was missed and Arellano rebounded the ball, pushed it back up to make the game winning shot, keeping it from overtime.
