In its 20th year of operation, The Power House Youth Center, in cooperation with New Haven city government and the Drug and Alcohol Consortium of Allen County will be displaying orange ribbons on poles and trees in the downtown business section during the last week of April. New Haven police will also be displaying orange ribbons on their squad cars.
Since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma, and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol related issues. This year’s theme is “Talk Early-Talk Often.” It can be daunting to talk to young people about underage drinking and illegal drug-use. Kids who have conversations with positive adults and learn about dangers of alcohol use are 50% less likely to use alcohol than those who don’t have such conversations. We believe it is worth all the effort and awareness we can put into it. It is important for young people to delay drinking until they reach adulthood and can make choices based on facts, rather than peer pressure.
Bonnie Roth, Director of Operations works with volunteers and young people in this year’s education emphasis—Building HEART: Healthy, Empowered, ATOD Resilient Teens. The Power House provides the youth of our community positive alternatives for today’s negative behaviors in a safe, drug free environment surrounded by caring Christian adults.
