The Ron Phillips Memorial Scholarship is from the Harlan Lions Club, with the blessing of the Phillips family. It was set up to recognize a Woodlan Service/Leo Club Senior who demonstrates an ongoing interest in serving others. Ron Phillips, an exemplary member of the Harlan Lion’s Club for over fifty years, graduated from Harlan, and all of his children are Woodlan grads. The Lions motto is “We Serve” and Mr. Phillips truly modeled that motto. In his honor, one college-bound senior each year will be chosen from the Woodlan Service/Leo Club to receive a $500.00 scholarship to the college/university of their choice. This year the chosen senior, Katilyn Burns, has been involved in almost every aspect of service club, and has accrued the highest number of service hours. She worked various fundraisers for our Christmas families such as Woodlan’s haunted library & zombie walk, the talent show, concessions, and bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Katilyn also helps with the blood drives, food/clothing, shoe drives, and the soup kitchens. Not counted in this is the number of hours she spent writing articles since she is also the public relations officer. Katilyn has a heart of gold, and surely will continue with her spirit of service at IPFW, where she plans to attend this fall to pursue a Science degree.
