Kindergarten and first grade students at Central Lutheran School got a hands-on look at history by celebrating the 50th day of school in style! Students dressed up in 1950s attire and compared and contrasted life in the 1950s to life today. Kindergarten students read a book about the 1950s and created a Venn diagram showing ways that toys, music, homes, clothes, and technology were alike and different. They counted to 50 in several different ways and played math games with a 1950s theme. Legos were invented in the 1950s so the kindergarteners worked in teams to create something using 50 Legos and wrote about their creation. First graders had lots of fun learning to blow bubbles with bubble gum! After a few minutes of trying, they graphed their results. Surprisingly, many of them were able to blow one! They also looked at how things have changed from then until now, including creating life size records using real records. During math time, students had fun practicing counting by 5s to 50, counting 50s themed objects, and practicing their counting-on skills to 50. Students also learned how to make special root beer floats. They learned to do the twist and hula-hoop at the sock hop and had a blast celebrating that they are 50 days smarter!
