The Holgate Tigers defeated Edon in the first round of sectionals in a 19 point victory, shooting them to the top of the Sectional Final game against the Antwerp Lady Archers, who had a first round bye.
The Sectional Final game took place at Defiance High School on Saturday, February 25 and the game got underway with Rachel Williamson grabbing the tip off to pass it to Hope Smith getting off to a good start. The Tigers retaliated quickly and was up to a 5 points after Madilyn Hohengerger and Kameron Kupfersmith scoring a 2 and 3 point field goal, respectively. Eight more points were scored by Williamson and the first period ended close at 10-8.
The next period was very similar, but Rachel started early foul trouble and coach Scott McMichael pulled her out before the end of the half after scoring 4. Maggie Wilson chipped in two points on the far side of the court and Becca Johanns struck gold with a 3 point basket. The Lady Tigers added two more 3-point field goals and a 2-pointer by Kacee Theisen before the half. The score at the break slightly expanded Antwerp’s lead 19-16.
Coming back to the third period, both teams stepped up the aggression. Lots more fouls and both sides were using their bodies to push the competition around—just look at the pictures! With the defense increasing neither team added as many points as before. Wilson and Williamson both posted another basket along with Karsyn Brumett adding her first basket when she drove right into an opening in the key and scored a layup. On the Holgate side, Bailey Plott added her first 3-pointer and Hohenberger became active again with a 2-pointer from under the basket. The 3rd period finished with Antwerp on top at 26-22 and still close enough for either team to claim the prize.
The fourth period continued the aggressive behavior for Holgate while Antwerp tried to pull back a little and just slow the pace down. They were not all that successful with 10 fouls in this half, while the Tigers fouling went over 10 as they became desperate with Bailey Plott fouling out of the match. Sending Antwerp to the foul line might work under certain conditions, but not on this night. Wilson and Williamson both had 4 fouls to call their own by the time the buzzer rang for the last time. The Archers scored 8-11 from the charity line and rocketed their points to an 8 point lead by the end 34-26.
Following the win, Antwerp cut down the nets and posed for the team victory! Great job to the Lady Archers who are now 17-6. Holgate finished their season on even keel at 12-12.
