Mrs. Amie Ashworth of Grover Hill School works with Jake Downing during the school day teaching him Science and Social Studies. For the last few weeks, they have been discussing economics with a focus on Entrepreneurship. They discussed wants/needs, producer/consumer, marketing/advertising, donations, customer service, and surveys. To learn the fundamentals about small business Mrs. Ashworth used a hands-on approach and helped Jake build a lemonade stand out of an old school AV cart. They advertised Jake’s business with a commercial on youtube for the faculty of Grover Hill Elementary School. A few days later, Jake took the skills he learned and went around selling lemonade to the adults at school for $. 50/cup. He made a total of $26.50 which he will donate to Relay for Life this upcoming Spring. At the end of his experience, Jake gave each adult a survey to fill out regarding his business. He received many encouraging comments. Many adults responded positively to the survey. One of the questions was, “(Yes or No) If I sell again, would you prefer a choice? If so what would you prefer?” Many decided that “yes” they would like a choice, and the most popular response was iced tea. After tallying his results, Jake will be making another round of lemonade, and he will add ice tea as well. He will be selling again in the near future, and he will also add the money collected then to be given to Relay for Life.
