Parson to Person

By: Dr. James Bachman

Dear Parson,

In John 14:12, Jesus said to His disciples that they would do greater works than His. How can that be?

Jesus was explaining to them why He had to ascend to His Father. He would pray to His Father to send the Holy Spirit to indwell each believer (v.16-17). That was the same source of power through which Christ did His works. “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38)

Greater can mean in quality or quantity. Certainly the quality of Christ’s works was not exceeded, but the quantity of His works was.

Christ’s physical ministry was limited to a small part of the world. However, through the Holy Spirit working in the conglomerate ministry of Christ’s followers, the whole world could be reached. That is truly a greater work.

Don’t miss out on being a part of that greater work! Send questions and comments to: jamesbachman@juno.com
