Stan’s Ramblings

The area and 2017

Here in the Tri-state area we had a wet spring, well, in fact it was wetter than usual clean up to Thanksgiving.

Our annual events started out with Horsepower Holiday Weekend at the Paulding County fair grounds May 5th, 6th and 7th, hosted by Dan Bowers of Advanced Chassis. For the most part, it got rained out but I’m sure Dan will try again! The Rotary Club’s pancake and sausage breakfast was down at the United Methodist Church the end of May. Along about that same week the A.C.D.C. had their annual rib fest down by the fire house and it was well attended.

Then in July, Larry Copsey and his volunteers had the annual Big Boy$ Toy$ and they had more entries than they ever had before. Next Dan Bowers from Advanced Chassis had the excursion on the Maumee with rafts, canoes and kayaks. He took me down to the river and showed me how much work the A.C.D.C. volunteers had done to make the local marina.

The Chamber of Commerce had their annual Day in the Park, Mr. and Mrs. Tim Copsey were the honored guests this year. The weather was fine and lots of people  turned out for the occasion.

The Flat Rock Creek festival was well attended. It is sort of a county wide affair.

Dan Bowers braved the cold and hosted Horsepower Halloween Weekend at the fairgrounds October 27th and 28th. That same weekend the Antwerp volunteer fire department sponsored the annual halloween celebrations this year. The weather was cold, but the kids didn’t mind that at all.

On November 25th, the chamber had a “Shop Small Saturday”, a shop locally day. I talked to some of the people and they had a ball at the scavenger hunt and there was prizes and good values and prices. The weather was fine also.

Americans have stood for the United States flag since June 14th, 1777, the day the Continental Congress declared that the flag of the thirteen states (or the United States) be thirteen stripes, alternate of red and white and that thirteen stars be white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.

We stand for the flag and National Anthem today, not to please ourselves, but to honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The name “American” deserves the highest respect and pride. The standing for the flag and anthem at a public gathering shows that we are all Americans, no matter what race or religion. Standing shows the ultimate support to sportsmanship.

We do not stand because of past or present injustices, but to salute the principle of justice. Over the years, there has been over 1.2 million people give their lives for our freedom. We have 1024 boys still asleep in the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor. We lost 3000 ships to the Kamikaze caused during the Japanese war and those boys are asleep in the deep. We lost thousands of boys in the Atlantic and the North Atlantic and from the run to Murmansk. I wonder what they would think when an American won’t stand for the National Anthem.

If you are an American, act like an American! It has been understood since June of 1777, that you honor the American flag by standing, if you can, when it passes by. You also stand when you sing the National Anthem.

In this demonstrating your feelings bit, I guess you have every right to demonstrate, but is it for real or just to get on t.v.? In using your civil rights, are you stepping on someone else’s civil rights?

I guess to me, it boils down to this: If you are an American, live like an American!

Be a booster, not a detriment!

See ya!

• You only get one chance to make a first impression

• Opportunity only knocks once

• Strike while the iron is hot

• She hid her light under a bushel

• I will always wish I had

• It is always better to apologize than be sorry

• Daisies don’t tell

• It is easier to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission

• I didn’t know the gun was loaded

• She looked clean

• She had an 800 number

• Does my ring hurt your finger when you go out at night?

• One in the hand is better that two in the bush

• On the other hand, she had warts

• Never miss an opportunity

• Does she have a sister?

• Just a little kiss that you will never miss

• Have another little nip

See ya!

Thanksgiving is over, but it just brings on a busier season. I was very fortunate, I had two big dinners this year. This fall has been so nice, because everyone is enjoying cheaper heat bills.

Thank goodness that so called “Black Friday” has come and gone. I can see both sides of that, but I didn’t partake in any of it. I can’t agree with all of the shenanigans.

Just now, we had visitors here at the West Bend News. Nick and Peggy Lake from the Gar Creek area, came in and we had a very good talk about old Antwerp, as Mr. Lake’s mother was a Lindemuth and her mother was a Harrmann, both from Antwerp. I remember all those people and I surely enjoyed our visit.

The Harrmann’s and the Lindemuth’s were both pioneers here in Antwerp’s growth after the canal and timbers were gone.

James B. Lindemuth was mayor of Antwerp from 1906 to 1908, during the time that we got the new Town Hall.

Kirk Hopkins just showed me a picture he had taken of a fox squirrel with a white tail. Now he looked it up and that is not a freak of nature, that species of squirrel is native to the American southwest. It is a little smaller than our fox squirrel, closer to a grey squirrel’s size. I had a never seen one before. Thanks a lot Kirk.
