County rivals Antwerp and Paulding squared off in a non-league girls basketball game last Tuesday with the Lady Archers outlasting Paulding for a 37-33 victory. Antwerp had previously traveled to Edon in the first contest for Antwerp and won 52-37
Paulding opened up the game with the first point, but soon was overtaken by the Antwerp 3 point girls. Antwerp pounced on the opportunity. Antwerp’s Rachel Williamson, Karsyn Brumett and Tiera Gomez all scored 3 point baskets in the first quarter and at one time had a 13-1 point lead over the Lady Panthers. Antwerp jumped in front in the first half, taking a 13-8 advantage after one quarter before expanding that to a 20-12 lead at the break.
However, the Panthers would rally to trim the deficit to 26-24 at the end of three quarters.
Paulding would eventually take the lead midway through the fourth quarter, but it was the Archers who rallied and then held off the maroon and white for the four point win.
Rachel Williamson led the way for Antwerp with 14 points while Hope Smith chipped in eight and Karsyn Brumett added 6. Chelsea Johanns (3), Tiera Gomez (3) and Heather Oberlin (3) also scored for Antwerp.
Sydney McCullough topped the Panther efforts with 9 points and Cassidy Posey recorded 8 markers.
Other scorers for the maroon and white were Audrey Manz (6), Kaylen Hale (5) and Briana Townley (5).
