The Antwerp Archers opened up their boys basketball season by traveling to the Panthers home court on Saturday, December 2. The previous night the Panthers began their season by crushing the Pirates, but this night was different when Antwerp took control of the court early and won the match 46-54.
The game started with the Archers’ Luke Brewer getting in 2 3-point baskets in the first quarter and Ty Rebber adding a couple field goals to that score. On the Panther side, Marcus Miller, Ethan Rhonehouse and Fletcher Cook all started with 2 points. The Antwerp crew was not afraid of fouling on the shot and this gave Ethan Rhonehouse 2 more points when he made half from the line. The first period ended up 8-11.
It looked as if Antwerp might get into foul trouble early when 7 different fouls in the 2nd quarter sent Blake Dobbelaere to the foul line twice along with 4 other free-throw shooters. Blake, Marcus, and Jared Miller all hit both shots, helping the Panthers our on their score with 10 points from free-throws alone. On the Antwerp side, Jake Ryan made the score board for the first time with a 2 and 3 point field goals along with a pair of free-throws. Brewer was also back on, hitting another 3 pointer and free throw. Cole Seslar and Jayvin Landers also got on the score board for the first time. The half ended with Paulding trailing the Archers 26-22.
Coach Billman got the Archers’ fouling under control, coming back, but Paulding took control of the scoring and nearly tied the game by the beginning of the fourth quarter. Cook and Miller both added 3 point baskets for Paulding. While Luke Brewer added 2 more 3-pointers. Rebber was back on with a field goal and free throw. The points were now only 1 point different at 36-37.
In the fourth quarter, Antwerp stepped up the defense and limited Paulding to a minimal amount of points with only 10 on the board. The packed field house had the crowds on fire for their side, but ultimately it was Antwerp who was able to take the win when the Panthers became desperate and started fouling to get the ball, sending Archers to the line. Ryan hit all four of his free throws under pressure and Luke Brewer posted 6 more points. The night surely went to Brewer who overall scored 22 points on his first night!
