The Paulding County Spelling Bee took place at Antwerp Local School this year with 10 competitors from the area public, private and home schools. The competitive night was Tuesday, February 6. The participants were the following:
Antwerp Elementary – Jessica Thornell, 5th grade
Antwerp Middle School – Gaige McMichael, 8th grade
Christian Home Educators of Paulding County – Malachi Jones, 8th grade
WT Payne Elementary – Emma Laukhuf, 6th grade
WT Grover Hill Elementary – Libby Meraz, 6th grade
Divine Mercy Catholic School – Jasmine Mattson, 6th grade
Wayne Trace Junior High – Faith Meraz, 8th grade
Paulding Elementary – Lucas Beckman, 5th grade
Oakwood Elementary – Jamy Hunt, 6th grade
Paulding Middle School – Sarah Wong, 6th grade
The final round came down to Sarah Wong from Paulding Middle School and Faith Meraz from Wayne Trace Junior High school.
Faith won in the 14th round with the final word chance “chintz”.
All of these young people worked diligently to make it to this County Spelling Bee championship and should be commended for their scholastic efforts. They all earned a medal for being County qualifiers.
Now, Faith will move on to the Regional Spelling Bee in Fort Wayne on March 3 with Sarah Wong serving as the Runner Up in case Faith cannot compete.
