Due to abuse of the recycling drop off site in the Village of Oakwood, the WMEA Program will no longer have it as a recycling drop off site effective immediately. This will affect not only Oakwood, but also Melrose and Junction.
This is an unfortunate situation for those communities in Paulding County. The problem of people abusing the Oakwood Village drop off site is not new – it has been an ongoing problem. The program Manager, Becky Suvar, attended one of the Oakwood Council’s meetings where this was discussed. The village provided signage to put site letting residents know when the recycling date and times were to happen; what to recycle and how to prepare those items; and reminded them that dropping off items before or after was inappropriate. Even with this information, residents continued to abuse the site, leaving items as much as two days ahead of the designated date and times listed.
This situation created many harmful issues to the community
• Site became an eyesore as the site was located at the park
• Littering possibilities occurred with rain and wind
• With such bad practices, others began to abuse the site as well
What’s next?
The residents will no longer have the WMEA Program to come to their own community to recycle – but may have to travel to continue to recycle.
The Village of Oakwood and the Village of Melrose have a contract with Real Waste to pick up recycling. Residents, however, must call them to get on their recycling route. Their number is 419-594-3555.
Erie Recycling located in Antwerp will accept recycling items – 24/7. For more information, their number is 419-258-2345.
Kohart Recycling located just outside of Broughton will take cardboard, steel cans, newspapers only. For more information, their number is 419-399-4144.
The Junction Community will have an opportunity in March – only – to take a recycling survey to try and provide a recycling opportunity for them. Becky Suvar, WMEA Program Manager will be there to discuss the future of recycling for them.
