I MIGHT BE WRONG

By: Stan Jordan

This Nikolas Cruz killing seventeen people and wounding a lot more at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida is an open and shut case that I talked about in my column last week.

In the old west, with a case that solid, the killer would be dead by sundown, but that will never happen here, although I think it should.

This young man undoubtedly has something wrong in his head and as I hear, he is in solitaire confinement, under suicide watch and probably more.

He will never make a good, treatable citizen, so he should get the death penalty soon, but that won’t happen.

In a case like this, even with no mind problem, it will take twenty years or more, because of all the appeals, retrials and all. But I look for this boy to be in and out of an asylum and escape proof prison for life.

If they don’t do away with him, then there is no justice for all those families who lost people it that worthless shooting.

I HEARD FROM DR. CAINE’S GRANDSON

By: Stan Jordan

In February 13th West Bend News I wrote a column about the late Dr. Caine and family. I received an email from his grandson, Steve Nahrwold, who lives just outside of Washington D.C. and I want to share the letter with all of you “Old Timers” who remember those fine people.

Steve’s mother was Clarice Ann and she married Norman Nahrwold and not his cousin Gerald and they had four children. Shirley lives in Ft. Wayne, Judith of Chesterton, Indiana and Fred from up around Gar Creek.

Dr. Caine oldest daughter Margaret Osborne died giving birth to her only child, Richard Osborn of Toledo. Steve told me that Bill Caine of Antwerp High School 1940, lived around Columbus with his wife Doris Baer and they had two sons.

Steve, I will tell you one more anecdote about the great Dr. Caine.

In the fall of 1941 Jack Buckhard and I were to report to Dr. Caine’s office and get a physical to play basketball for Antwerp High School 1941 – 1942. He was busy playing checkers with the Honor Mayor Charles Bissell. Mayor Bissell was either mayor or city clerk for well over twenty years, a real pioneer for Antwerp as he arrived on a canal boat at Hutchkins Lark as a boy in 1863.

Dr. Caine checked our teeth, nodes, chest and heart and said, “Okay, you boys go back to school.”

We said, “Doc, we don’t have any money!” He said, “That’s alright, I will get it off of some democrat” and we laughed and left.

Steve, I want you to know that I really appreciate your letter and a lot of older people will also.

SNOWY OWL

By: Stan Jordan

The other day, Van, our UPS driver, made a delivery at West Bend News and was telling us about seeing a snowy owl a little southeast of Antwerp in the area of Road 51 and 124. The big bird was sitting on a telephone pole.

On Friday morning Cork Hughes stopped in the office and he saw a big snowy owl, on the Wednesday before stopping in, around that same area (around 61 and SR 111). He thought maybe that owl was after some pigeons since there was some in that area.

A little later on Friday morning, Linda Baumert came in the office and she was telling about seeing a male and a female snowy owl in that same area. That makes me very happy to hear all that news about a pair of snowy owls together. They must have a nest around here somewhere.

In my reading on the snowy owl, it says the male gets whiter the older he gets. He seems to lose spots or they get lighter in color. Now the owls that I have seen, those spots looked blue to me, but I’ve heard brown and black even, but maybe that has to do with his age.

I understand that he doesn’t “hoot” his noise is more of a bark, but he does make more than one noise.

Thanks to all of these folks.
