MOUNT VERNON, Ohio — Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s Communication Sciences and Disorders program video was named “Best in Ohio” at the 2018 Ohio Speech Language and Hearing Association (OSLHA) convention. This was MVNU’s first time to submit an entry. The video showcased CSD students and information about the three-year-old major, particularly focusing on the Hunter Hall CSD Clinic, 221 S. Main St. CSD graduates go on to graduate school to pursue either a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or a Doctorate degree in Audiology.
“Winning the video contest was exciting because there is now increased awareness that MVNU has great CSD students who are creative, smart, and well prepared to pursue careers in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology,” said Florence Lim-Hardjono, M.A., Ph.D. (ABD)., CCC-SLP, Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at MVNU.
The process for selection was a combination of votes from friends of the program and a decision by the OSLHA leadership committee. MVNU would like to thank all who took the time to watch the videos and submit a vote. The video was shot and edited by Eddie Dilts, an MVNU junior journalism and media production major from Gahanna, Ohio.
The Hunter Hall Clinic for Communication Sciences and Disorders allows students to apply what they are learning while providing communication disorders services within the community. The clinic houses five therapy rooms and provides services by appointment during the academic school year only. Through MVNU’s pre-professional major program in Communication Sciences and Disorders, the university hopes to fill the gap for those in need of such services.
“One of the major strengths of the CSD program at MVNU is the opportunity for students to work with clients in the CSD clinic. This type of experience is not often available at the undergraduate level, so it makes our program stand out. In addition, highly qualified faculty, an active NSSHLA (National Student Speech Language Hearing Association), small class sizes, and excellent clinic resources make this a strong, desirable program.”
“Small classes are especially valuable because they allow faculty to monitor students’ academic progress. Students are held to high academic and professional standards because of the high responsibility of providing excellent evidence-based therapy sessions to clients during clinical experiences,” said Lim-Hardjono.
MVNU is the only Nazarene university in the U.S. and the only member of the Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities in the state of Ohio to offer this major.
