In the 2018 graduating class of Wayne Trace High School, there were 5 top scholars all earning the status: Valedictorian.
Lily Sinn the daughter of Gary and Paulette Sinn, earned a 4.0 GPA. She received the following academic awards: Advanced Math, Honors Diploma, 1st honors academic letter, and scholar athlete. She was a member of the National Honor Society, and participated in Spanish club, student council as vice president, choir, school musicals – Musicman, Fiddler on the Roof, and Beauty and the Beast, softball and basketball. Outside of school, Lily participates in church choir and church youth group. She volunteers her time to teach basketball, package food, work at the local food bank, and made blankets for single mothers.
Lily’s future plans are to attend IPFW to major in mathematics, find a job she loves and hopefully in 10 years get married and have children.
When asked what she will miss about high school, she replies, “I will miss how close I was with everyone.”
Kalin Gerber, daughter of Shane and Shawn Gerber earned a 4.0 GPA. She earned the 1st honors academic letter, scholar athlete, honors diploma, physics department award, and Spanish II department award. She is also a member of student council, and vice president of the PHS’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Activities that Kalin has participated in include choir, Spanish club, the school’s fall musical, softball and volleyball, 4-H, club volleyball, fall softball, and youth group.
Kalin plans to attend Wright State University for Biomedical Engineering. She says, “I want to make prosthetics for amputees.” In 10 years she sees herself working as an engineer and raising a family.
Sara Sinn, daughter of Steve Sinn and Joy Sinn, has earned a 4.0 GPA. Her awards and achievements include honors diploma, academic letter awards, academic honor awards, Spanish III award, English III award, and English I award. She is a member of the National Honor Society, choir, student council, senior class president, spanish club, volleyball, and basketball. Sara received both the Volleyball and Basketball Coaches award her senior year. Outside of school, Sara in involved in the Latty Apostolic Christian Church youth group.
“I will miss all of the friendships I have made over the past four years,” Sara states when asked what she will miss about high school.
Sara’s future plans are to attend the University of Toledo and major in Nursing. She hopes to be a nurse anesthetist and have a family with a successful nursing career.
Leah Maassel, daughter of Mike and Tana Maassel, earned a 4.0 GPA. She has participated in National Honor Society, Scholastic Bowl, volleyball, and dance. Leah is actively involved in her church activities at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Antwerp, and she also babysits and helps at nursing homes.
Leah is very excited about her future plans: “I have been dancing my whole life, and I have signed my letter of intent to dance on Concordia University Ann Arbor’s competition dance team. In 2016, I auditioned and was selected to be part of a dance troupe at a youth conference in New Orleans, Louisiana,” Maassel continues, “I am very excited to participate on my college’s dance team. I started dancing when I was three, so being able to continue is a dream come true. I never imagined I would get this far with it, and I am so thankful to my parents and dance teachers for all of their support. Before I start that in the fall, I am excited to spend time with my family, friends, and dachshund at the lake this summer. To me, there is nothing better than hanging out in the sun on a boat with the people I love.”
While at Concordia University, Leah plans to major in Diagnostic Medical Sonography. Then she wants to become a Sonographer, settle down, buy a small house, and start a family.
Connor Baumle, son of Pat and Wendy Baumle, earned a 4.0 GPA. Awards earned by Connor include 1st academic honors and National Honor Society. He participated in band, choir, and school musicals. Outside of school, Connor participates in 4-H Blue Ribbon Workers Club, 4-H junior leaders club, 4-H camp counselor, and the community play. When asked what he will miss most about high school, Connor replied, “The people that I will rarely see again who helped me along this journey.”
Currently, Connor works as a shift leader at the Paulding Dairy Queen.
His future plans are to attend BGSU to major in Construction Management and become a successful construction manager.
