The GMC Champions Antwerp Quiz Bowl. This is the first time in 20 years the Quiz Bowl team won and they had 10 varsity players. Marty Miller presented an award and pins to the participants.
The liaison report for the state was read by Bob Herber about Senate Bill 260. This should give more local control to the school. This will extend teachers licensure from pre-k to 5th grade. The superintendent also can give an unlicensed teacher the ability to have 3 years without extending their license. Marty mentioned that he does not believe it will pass.
The Vantage report was read by Dennis Recker. He said the senior awards were at the Nighswonger instead of the school. The last day for juniors was May 21. The early placement program had several students getting local skills at companies such as Schweller Electric. On June 6 they will be having a Summerfest for sophomores preparing for Vantage. The summer camp for 6-8 graders will be June 4-5.
The Treasurer’s report was read by Kristine Stuart: income: $951,677.69; expense: $672,618.88; Interest: $7,712.29. The first half of the windmill revenue arrived – approximately $90,000. 60 kindergarteners are already signed up for the school.
Amy Hammer, Elementary Principal, gave her report. The first graders took pizza over to the Sheriff’s office. It was made possible because of the Friday popcorn sales. She said there are 26 students in each fifth grade class right now. They may have to revisit the situation and hire another teacher if they increase over the summer.
Travis Lichty, high school principal, said there are 42 graduating seniors who completed all of the requirements. The exams are all finished after this week. Track is in districts right now. Softball and baseball teams fell out of the tournament at the games on Wednesday night. He mentioned appreciation to all of those who helped with senior prom. He said there was a lot of positive feedback on the after prom experience. He also thanked the scholarship presenters.
Amelia Miller was a winner at the state level in an art contest. The prize was awarded by Ohio State Representative, Craig Riedel. Marty Miller said that two bus drivers have been hired. Substitute bus drivers are also needed. Mr. Tim Manz is leaving Antwerp to work at Wayne Trace in a similar position, and the board is looking for a replacement. Kyle Zartman is being hired at Antwerp as a foreign language teacher. The baseball and softball fields are pretty much done. Nick Longardner will be removing the old bleachers at the football field. Marty is looking forward to the new innovation center that is coming together next year. In the last month the solar field produced 100% of the electricity. The change for the solar contract has taken place and now the school will be getting a check rather than credits from AEP.
Harold Gottke said the water heater tank needs changed as it was leaking very badly. Over $37,000 will be donated for new equipment. This will include tanks and replace the boilers. The school will need to pay for the installation costs. The sound system replacement had 6 companies bidding on this replacement. The broadcast room is complete, and Broadcast instructor, Kayla Bagley, took the school board members of a tour of the new room.
All school forms will be filled out online after this year through eSchool View. They will also be building a new website. There are two books being donated in honor of Mary Davis by the Paulding County Retired Teachers Association.
Marty Miller stated that they are working on a new bus pickup location at the Divine Mercy Catholic Church for the kids on the south side of the tracks in Antwerp. Before, the students would either have to have their parents drive them, or they would have to walk. He said parents had brought concerns about this to him and he looked into it and realized this concern was valid and needed to be rectified.
Marty was very excited to point out that Antwerp was the highest ranking school in the area in USNews and World Report. Antwerp school has been selected to present at the Ohio School Board Forum on November 12.
After an executive meeting the board approved a contract with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office for a 3 year period to provide a Resource Officer for in-school security.
