Hen Peck: Not really known why; located in Crane Township

Link Post Office: Located corner of SR 49 and CR 230; possibly a link between Hicksville and Antwerp
Marie DeLarme: “marais de l’orme: means “elm swamp”
Maumee: The French called the Indians Miami, but the natives said the word so fast it sounded like “Maumee”
Ohio: From an Iroquois word meaning great river
Tates Landing: For Irish canal contractor Lyle Tate who owned land there on the canal
Wildcat Creek: A pioneer reminiscence noted that the area was once full of wildcats, bear, wolves and panthers
Worstville: Named after John Worst who owned a saw mill on the railroad

SO YOU ARE GETTING A NEW STOOL

My good friend is talking about getting a new stool, commode, throne, crapper, John, water closet, super bowl…regardless of what you call it, it is a very important part of the necessary room.
You can’t just buy any stool, you must check around first. Like, did you know that the crapper is named after the Englishman who invented it, John Crapper. Actually the working parts of the toilet are almost the same as they were back in 1870. They work about the same and for the same reason, but Gee Wiz, now they are taller or shorter, more or less water, quieter, different colors, but still very necessary.
You must bear in mind, the size and height of family members… are they short or tall? This might be a problem if you buy a new type tall one and you have a short person in the family, you will have a dissatisfied young one right away.
Now I know a person who kept a brick in the water chest of his stool so it would use less water and it probably helped, but that is not the case in these new type of stools. In these new type of stools you use less water, but you have to flush more often, so what do you gain? They ask you to use less paper, because less water can be a problem.
Now, if you have an elderly person in the household, or if you and your spouse are getting older the new higher type is stool is more handy for you, but sometimes older folks use more paper and that is a no no with a stool that uses less water.
You can see this new stool purchase is going to take a lot of thought, you shouldn’t rush right into a decision yet. Because if you have some short people and they have to use a step stool to climb up on the stool, I can see a lot of problems here and after real thought on this I can see about a half dozen problems and most of them are not good.
You must think this purchase over and have some discusion period.
Do you want a kid with a broken arm or leg just for less water? Are you listening to some high class salesperson?
The biggest share of stools are called American Standard and are made in Mansfield, Ohio. The standard American is either a pointer or a sitter, so that cuts the problem of buying a new stool down a little bit.

MY THINKING ON THE EAGLES

Here to fore, I always sort of thought that the eagle was a loner. You always saw a picture of him alone, away off in the blue somewhere, or in some deep canyon flying around looking for a meal. But I’m starting to think maybe that is wrong, they are not that much of a loner.
I am starting to think both parents help raise their young. I get lots of pictures and reports of three or four or more eagles eating on a dead deer carcass together. Like you can tell the adult mom and pop because of the white head, that is why they are called the bald eagle. They have this year’s young and are teaching the young how to eat food on their own. Once in a while I get a report of five or six eagles eating a carcass and I’m convinced that a couple of them are from but a year or farther back.
The Fed-Ex lady told me one time that over by Insource Technologies over in Paulding, she saw a number of eagles eating together on the lawn of that company and there was no squabbling amongst them.
I have received a number of reports about the Power Dam in Defiance when 10 or 12 adults and young were eating the fish where the water wasn’t frozen and all was peaceful. I am content to think that last year’s young birds remain in the area to a certain extent. We see too many times where there is a large number of birds together and they usually have a pair of chicks. Yes, I think these birds are nieces and nephews and cousins, in people talk.
Now that is just my way of thinking, but I have a lot of reports to back me up. I think the area and the food chain has a lot to do with it.

SOME STORIES

I was a rural carrier on R1 out of Antwerp from 1949 to 1981. I enjoyed everyday of it, let me tell you about some of my days.
Probably in the 1960’s I had a letter for Elmer Laney from International Harvester in Fort Wayne. It was type written right above his name that it was registered mail, but it wasn’t. There was no extra postage or markings on the envelope, but I took the letter right up to the door and told Elmer about it, therefore I knew he received it and I went on the rest of the route.
Well, when I got to Elmer’s mail box the next day, he was waiting to talk to me. He said, “Stan, you can bring me a letter like that anytime, it was from the Harvester and they said I would get a pension of $78 per month from now on. Stan, I thank you very much cause I could use that.” That was a nice check at that time.
About that time up on the Knouse Road I got stuck right in the middle of the road with my Plymouth. I had to go to Alfred Garmater’s house and he pulled my car out with his horse. That was very embarrassing…an old horse pulling my car out of the mud. Alfred said there was a natural spring right in the middle of the road.

PANCAKES, SAUSAGE & MORE

The local EMS squad will be having a pancake, sausage and more breakfast on the morning of June 2nd. This will be at the EMS building on the corner of Cleveland and Daggett from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m.
There will be a free will offering. I understand the “more” will be eaten with a spork.
