Paulding, OH: Kiwanis member Lisa McClure introduced Dr. Michael Thompson, president of Northwest State Community College. Dr. Thompson is the 7th president at NWSCC and is proud to represent a school that he says aligns with his own person values. Northwest State Community College’s mission statement is to serve by providing access to excellent and affordable education, training, and services that will improve the lives of individuals and strengthen communities. NWSCC serves 192,000 people and 77,000 families between Williams, Fulton, Defiance, Paulding, Henry, and Van Wert counties. They serve the community by offering transfer pathways, custom training, and direct-to-job opportunities. 85% of students attending the college are part-time, compared to the national average of 62%. They pride themselves in allowing their students of all ages to balance work, faith, and family. 82% of NWSCC students remain in NW Ohio, having a $10 million impact on the area.
Celebrating their 50 years the college really values integrity, learning, and the people they serve. Their vison for the future is to be an innovative leader in education and training, and a first-choice institution that empowers individuals and communities to achieve a sustainable quality of life. Something that Dr. Thompson stressed was the importance of their overall goal which is to encourage partnerships that lead to a family sustaining wage. Family wage jobs are essential to the health and vitality of individuals, families, and communities. Dr. Thompson’s passion for his job and for the college really showed in his presentation, and his charisma made all Kiwanis members want to hit the books again!
