Stan’s Ramblings

By: Stan Jordan

The caption on this picture reads: Mr & Mrs. John Roberts of Waterville, Ohio found this sign in an eddy of the Maumee River in Farnsworth Park 3 years ago. Mr. Roberts is a train enthusiast and did some research to find out more about the treasure he had found. They were gracious enough to return it to our (Village of Antwerp) office last week. The holes in the sign match up with the hangers on the train side of the Depot.

CORRECTION

By: Stan Jordan

In Issue 39 of the West Bend News,  dated September 25, 2018, the picture of Three Pretty Girls stated that the third girl on the right was June Vail, but that was incorrect. The third girl on the right is Norma Bickhard Lucas, Class of 1953. Thank you for the correction but I went by what was on the back of the picture.

FISHING; I LOVED IT

By: Stan Jordan

I have been told that in the Good Book it says that God will not subtract any days that you spend fishing from four score and 10 years. I think that was written on the last page of the Bible with pencil.

I have fished from the time I was old enough to walk to the Maumee River, until I was too old and had too many aches and pains to climb in and out of the boat. I was a pole and line fisherman until I went to the army back in WWII. Even after I came home in 1945, I done a lot of fishing for crappies down in the Auglaize. I always enjoyed being out with the wildlife. I was never much for hunting, other than squirrel hunting. I was never an ice fisherman either, I just didn’t care for it.

Later on in life, I took up bass fishing, and I really enjoyed throwing that bait, you know, casting, mostly for large mouth Florida bass. I don’t care much for the Japanese, but they make some good fishing products. I used a lot of Daiwa reels, they were made pretty good, but don’t use WD40 on them because they have plastic gears and that stuff is bad on plastic.

I think night fishing in the Maumee for those big carp and catfish would be a barrel of fun.

THE 2018 SUMMER

By: Stan Jordan

Well, we are into fall now. Let’s look back and remember how the summer went.

On Memorial Day, we had a fine parade and festivities at the park. The weather was great!

A few days later, the A.C.D.C. had their annual RibFest down on Cleveland Street. It was well attended with nice weather.  Later that same month, the Big Boy$ Toy$ car show was on Main Street, and well over 120 cars were here. It seems everyone had a good time.

Then, there was the Ice Cream Social at The Bethel Church, and they had a good turnout.

The Antwerp Chamber of Commerce had A Day in the Park – the parade was the best ever, the weather was fine, and everyone enjoyed it.

The Maumee River Raft Race has been set back a little because of so much rain this past summer, but Dan Bowers tells me there is something special coming up yet this fall. I will tell you about it later.

CANDY CORN

By: Stan Jordan

Here it is almost Halloween, and I must get in the swing of things, so I have a large container of corn candy on my desk. I have loved those little morsels ever since I can remember. It is considered candy for rural society and boy, I’m rural. At one time it was called “chicken feed”.

It was started back in 1880 by George Renninger, with the name of Wunderlee Candy Company. Following the 19th century, the Goelitz Confectionary Company (now called Jelly Belly) manufactured them. It’s mostly sold in the United States and Canada. During the year and seasons, different colors are used like for Easter, Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or any season.

It is mostly combined sugar, corn syrup, Caranuba wax, water and a little marshmallow. As of 2016, annual production in the United State is 35 million pounds or almost 9 billion pieces of candy.

Yes, I have eaten my share.

WASHINGTON D.C.

By: Stan Jordon

The only thing in D.C. that is clear, honest, hard working, and trustable in my estimation, is the outside paint on the White House. I don’t think much of any of the inside contents.

For weeks now their has been inquiries and investigations of many people and many countries without any type of results.

There are one hundred senators and hundreds of congressmen that are drawing their wages but not doing any work. There is no governing or country leading going on at all. They blamed and investigated Russia for a few weeks, then the president’s son for a few weeks, then some sort of an illegal wire tap and then a raid on some lawyer’s office. None of this brought out anything that you could sink your teeth into, and yet these politicians accept their check. They should be ashamed.

They claim they represent the people back home…nothing could be further from the truth.

WHAT AM I TO BELIEVE?

By: Stan Jordan

I have told you before that I was disillusioned by the Supreme Court. I always thought they were true blue and all their decisions were out of the Constitution, the last law of the land, but all of this crap going on now about the admission of Mr. Kavanaugh to the unblemished circle.

Who and what am I to believe? Three ladies have said they were sexually assaulted by the new court candidate and he emphathetically denies any of it, and neither side has a back up witness and there in lies the outcome.

In our laws, you are innocent until proven guilty, so in light of that, the candidate is innocent and probably will be appointed.

But the ladies have gone through all of their revealing of a trauma from the incident and have said what they thought of the candidate and he will still get a life time job, but he has a questionable past.

All of the men who are to judge this hearing are mostly of the ruling party. It seems to me that this is tipped a little bit.

So what am I to believe?

I always thought the Supreme Court was clean as the new fallen snow, but now I’m not so sure.
