The .22 calibre rifle
By: Stan Jordan
In my thinking, the .22 is America’s gun. Most boys use and own a .22 as his first gun and I’m in favor of that. I am also in favor of our young girls to learn and use this fine gun. To me, gun safety and care and use are part of a teenager growing up.
The .22 comes in many fashions… single shot, clip fed, semi automatic and the prices vary. The single shot is a fine rifle for on the farm, it has many uses besides target shooting. When the farmer used to do his own butchering that was the weapon to kill the hog or steer. Some guys were good enough to shoot the rooster also, and we had home fried chicken, that is the best kind.
Yes, that .22 is America’s gun and it will kill, but they are always equipped with a safety button and that is a very good weapon to learn on. All the safety features and the care and nomenclature.
I imagine that in rural areas all boys 12-14 grew up with the .22. Probably the boys who grew up in the city would go down to the rifle range or maybe go out to grandpa’s farm. I think there are at least a dozen companies that make the .22 because it will always be popular and at Christmas it is a fine gift.
I made a survey of 14 people and 13 of them grew up with a .22 rifle. The 14th man said “Dad had one, but loaned it to his sister and she never returned it.” Nearly all homes in an area like this had a .22 and/or a .410 and nearly always a 12 gauge. I think that I am safe to say that none of them turned out to be terrorist.
Nearly everyone I talked to said the .22 calibre rifle was part of their growing up.

Me and the death sentence
By: Stan Jordan
Sometimes I think my mind is made up on this subject and then sometimes I’m not sure.
For instance, I think out in Colorado, a man killed his pregnant wife and their two daughters so he could have an affair with another lady. He carried on in such a way that he was above suspicion for a while. Anyhow he was charged with the murder and admitted the whole affair. I am in favor of hanging that man before the sun sets. If the perpetrator admits his guilt, don’t bother with a costly trial or all the discomfort that a jury would get, hang him right now.
In this country that law gives too much leeway to the accused. He will easily be alive for 20 years yet, if they observe his rights. But, how about his family’s right and all of their relatives’ rights?
In another case, one of the terrorists ran over and killed a few people, right on the public street, he used a big truck for his weapon. The police captured him and he admitted that he wanted to kill more. In my estimation, that man is not fit to be in our society, he never will be, so hang him that day.
If you don’t agree with me, why not? He certainly didn’t worry about those victims’ right or any of their families.
A person who takes a life, should be paying with his own life. It’s as simple as that.
A young man killed eight of his girlfriend’s family over custody of their new baby. Why should he be allowed to live? How would you molly coddle this killer? Would you save his life after he took eight lives?
Yes I am a hard head, but that is my right, and I respect your right.

Water, it’s priceless
By: Stan Jordan
Some big boys say, “Love makes the world go around.” Some CEOs say, “Cash makes the world go around.” Other big boys have their own ideas and say, “It’s food that makes the world go around” and it’s generally a product they sell. But how can you over look water? It is one of our most important resources and maybe one of the cheapest. Just stop and think about how many times a day that you use water.
You get up and the first place you go to is the bathroom and there you get ready for the day and you use water in various ways. Stop and count them. And you scream if there is no hot water. Then you go to the kitchen and in getting breakfast, you use all kinds of water in your food and also your drink.
I’ll bet you have already stopped counting. Water is so much of our daily existence, we don’t even think about it, it is priceless.
Now a farmer needs water and his case is really different. Outside his house water is needed and not needed. Every farmer at one time or other has said, “I wish I could control the rain.” But most farmers will add, “We will do our best with what we get.” We have to make do. Water isn’t wasted, mother nature takes care of used water and it is refined and used over, somewhere and somehow.
When rain comes down as snow or ice there are certain types of people who are very happy about that and some people are not. Like the farmer said, “We gotta make do.”
Now of course in some areas water is as precious as gold, but here, it is bountiful. Use it, but don’t waste it.

Popcorn, I love you
By: Stan Jordan
Webster said that popcorn is popped corn, a variety of corn kernels which expands and explodes when heated.
Corn was first domesticated about 10,000 years ago, in what is now, Mexico. Remnants of popcorn have been found as far back as 3600 B.C.
When I was growing up in the 1930’s there was a popcorn machine that looked about like this picture. A man named Cowell kept it in Tiny’s Restaurant and he would bring it out on the street on Saturday night or at a street affair and it was 5 or 10 cents a sack and he sold quite a bit of corn as you could smell that great odor for a city block. Antwerp was like any other town, they loved their popcorn.
According to Wikipedia, A popcorn kernel’s strong hull contains the seed’s hard, starchy endosperm and is about 14% moisture, which turns to steam when the kernel is heated. Pressure from the steam continues to build until the skin ruptures allowing the kernel to expand 20 – 50 times it’s original size.
There are six different types of corn: dent corn, flint corn, pod corn, popcorn, flour corn and sweet corn.
Here are a few facts about popcorn:
Americans eat about 17 billions quarts of popcorn each year, that is enough to fill the Empire State Building 18 times.
Nebraska produces an estimated 250 million pounds of popcorn each year, more than any other state. This is a quarter of all the popcorn produced in the United States each year.
Do not store un-popped popcorn in the refrigerator, it will dry the kernels out.
Popcorn kernels can go 3 feet in the air.
Popped kernels come in two shapes ( snow flake or mushroom)
Americans eat more popcorn than any other country.
Most of the popcorn eaten around the world is grown in the United States.
Most of the popcorn eaten in the U.S. is eaten in autumn, the movies and sport stadiums.
