Stan’s Ramblings

DEER PICTURE

In the above picture, Alvin Copsey is petting a fawn right in his back yard. This picture was taken out at Alvin’s place on CR 230.

He told me this little female just roamed around in his yard and didn’t seem to be afraid at all. He said the little deer was around his yard for a while and then left. He had not seen the deer before or since. The mother deer probably came along and found her.

Thanks again Alvin for this fine picture of our wild life.

ME AND 2018

By: Stan Jordan

It was another year alone out on the farm, just like the last seven, but I can’t dwell on that cause I’m so well blessed with life.

One of my great grandson’s, Zeb, graduated high school and is doing fine out in Grand Canyon University in Arizona.

Here in my little corner of the area, the famous window in the West Bend News building, things have been very good. Lots of area folks stop in and we talk about the wild life all around us and probably I know their folks and grandparents.

All the summer events here in Antwerp were well attended and I had a good time at all of them.

Last spring I was given an award from PPEC for a story that my sister had written about me and the area wild life conservation. I was very proud of that. I had the pleasure of meeting the CEO, George Carter, before, as well as some of their employees.

There are a number of groups in the area working with conservation and a lot of individuals.

We are making good headway in the making the Maumee usable. The ACDC and the Beregszazi  Tours are helping to make the Maumee River a place of recreation.

I think all the farmers in the tri-state area had a good growing season and enjoyed some good crops. At this time I think the employment rate around us is pretty good.

I can see a lot of new home construction all around. I am very proud of that, this is a fine area. We have some mighty good churches, schools, highways, police, EMS, firemen and citizens. It is just a fine place.

I want to say, that my co-worker Crystal Rider, is very helpful in many ways on my columns. In fact if she wasn’t so helpful, I would not get a column done. I really like her.

THE DRONES

By: Stan Jordan

As I sit here and think about it, the drone opens up a new type of world.

There are a number of types of drones and their uses, and a new idea comes along each day. There is no end to the many ways that can come from the use of the basic drone.

Lots of smaller varieties are on the market and are not expensive, but there are rules and laws concerning flying a drone, plus you must pass a test and purchase a license under certain circumstances. Actually the UAV, that means unmanned aerial vehicle, has been around for quite a few years. The government used the UAV in the war at Vietnam in lots of cases. Carrying explosives, aerial reconesance and was of secrecy.

I know that a company is building a drone on top of a small car and I’m sure the automotive future is just now coming to life. We just can’t imagine what all the future holds.

POLITICIANS ARE FULL
OF POLITICS

By: Stan Jordan

Here it is, the New Year is only a week old and things are all shook up. I have not blasted the politicians for a few weeks, but here goes:

Here it is 2019 and the United States is technically broke. Those meatballs in Washington are just twiddling their thumbs.

There is a government shutdown, there is no money to operate this huge operation. There are hundreds of government true-blue employees that are working their job everyday and not drawing a paycheck, but someday our political eggheads will get together and those fine employees will get paid, finally. Until then, let’s call a spade a spade. On one side it is a one man show, his way or else. The other side will not move, they now have a little muscle and they are going to use it… our way or else.

The politician that is suppose to represent their area back home, are doing nothing, but are being paid for it.  Actually this has been going on for months. There has been so many investigations and innuendos going on, nobody is running the store. We have hard heads on both sides of the aisle…my way or no way. Is that anyway to run a government? Maybe, time will tell.

JUST A FEW NOTES

By: Stan Jordan

This is December 27th  and as I left the farm and when I started south on S.R. 49 I saw 5 deer cross in front of me from west to east.

There were two adult females and three young ones. They were headed for Mrs. Friend’s woods.  They had come from Harry Cottrell’s woods.

Again, yesterday I saw my friend the woodpecker working on the big walnut tree and I’m not sure but he might be a pileated woodpecker as he is quite long, not fat, but about a foot from head to the end of the tail feathers. I just don’t get a good, long look at him, he works that same area on the tree and he hops over to the blind side and I can’t see him.

There is not a lot of action out in my yard, the buzzards are gone, the crows and robins have all gone south. I don’t have wren anymore, but the eagles and wild turkeys along with all the white tail deer are on this side of the river.

Don Oberlin was in the office today and he was telling me about some eagles he saw a few weeks ago over on 220 and 63. He saw 4 big adult eagles discussing who was going to eat the road kill out there in that bean field that had been combined. He said he never gets over being amazed at how big they are!

Now the leaves are gone, but nobody has said anything about seeing any new eagles’ nest around, but keep on a-looking.  I have talked to some fellows that are deer hunters and they are getting a few bucks. I like to see the deer, but there is too many and make driving dangerous. I do like the meat when it is made into hamburger or summer sausage.

Dick Savage stopped in and we discussed a lot of old memories. He belonged to the Hicksville Fire Department and I was a member of the Antwerp Fire Department.
