Some of you may have noticed or will notice some containers popping up around your school with a sign that looks a little something like this. The Paulding Soil & Water Conservation District and Paulding County WMEA have partnered up for a county-wide marker recycling program for schools to repurpose the markers that are used in our local schools every single day. The idea of a program such as this has caught on across the nation and locally throughout northwest Ohio.
Through this initiative, students in schools across Paulding County can recycle and repurpose used markers. The program is through Crayola® and is known as Crayola® ColorCycleTM. Any brand of markers will work to be recycled with this program. This program will accept regular markers, permanent markers, dry erase markers, and highlighters. The idea of the marker recycling program is to help kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment and why it is important to use our natural resources in a wise manner, according to Crayola®. That is one of the main reasons our offices decided to bring a marker recycling program to Paulding County.
This initiative will help to eliminate hundreds of tons of markers that go into landfills across the country each year. Look for these containers in the offices of your school to place your markers in. Once the container is full, the school will contact the SWCD or WMEA Office to pick up the markers and ship them off! There is no cost to the schools to participate other than helping us fill up the bins. Look for the marker recycling bins to show up in a Paulding County school near you in the next few weeks.
