Antwerp Boy Scout Troop 143 recently had a family canoe and camp weekend on the Maumee River. The weekend excursion started at the State Route 101 bridge near Woodburn and proceeded to Antwerp’s Riverside Park for the evening meal and camping. Then proceeded on to the Forders Bridge access site on Sunday.
This was a family event including brothers, sisters, moms and dads and even the family dog. With perfect summer weather and an incredibly clean river, a good time was had by all. The river is so clear these days, you can easily spot turtles on the river bottom along with all the fish and crawdads.
With numerous recent improvements to the river access sites, the introduction of the Maumee River Water Trail program, and the newly formed local canoe and kayak rental company, there has been a significant increase in activity on the river. Once on the river, it is easy to see how this became a state designated Scenic River.
The Boy Scout Troop has remained active throughout the summer and is planning to continue staying active in the months to come. They meet every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm at the VFW Post 5087 in Antwerp, boys age 11-17 are encouraged to stop in for a visit and consider joining in on the fun.
