Antwerp, Ohio—Tuesday, January 5, 2021, shortly after 5:00 p.m., a police chase began here when a deputy was dispatched to South Erie Street, Antwerp, Ohio, to assist a village police officer with searching a vehicle he had stopped for traffic violations.
Once the deputy arrived on scene and officers approached the suspect vehicle, the suspect vehicle fled the scene.
The deputy pursued the suspect vehicle southbound on State Route 49. The suspect vehicle reached speeds greater than 100 MPH. As the deputy gained to approximately a half mile of the suspect vehicle, the suspect vehicle struck a southbound 2008 Ford pickup truck owned and operated by Matthew A. McDougall, age 45, of Antwerp. The suspect vehicle then veered off the roadway and struck a power pole and rolled, eventually coming to rest against a tree on State Route 49 south of State Route 111 in Harrison Township. McDougall was uninjured.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 2008 Nissan Altima, was Anthony D. Greene, age 24, from Warren, Michigan. Hector A. Brujan, age 23, from Marion, Indiana was a passenger in Greene’s vehicle. Greene and Brujan were taken to Parkview Hospital where they were treated and eventually released.
During the investigation, suspected illegal narcotics were located in the Nissan, along with two loaded firearms.
A warrant to arrest Greene was obtained by the Sheriff’s Office for one count of Failure to Comply with order or signal of police officer, a Felony of the Third Degree, and Improperly Handling Firearms in a motor vehicle, a Felony of the Fourth Degree.
Greene was released from the hospital before the warrant could be executed by authorities.
This investigation is ongoing, and more charges could be presented to a Grand Jury after the case is reviewed by the Prosecuting Attorney.
The Van Wert Post of the Highway Patrol investigated the crash, and deputies were assisted at the scene by the Antwerp Police Department, Payne Fire Department and Payne EMS.
