The Van Wert Post investigated a single fatality traffic crash on US 127 and CR 176. Prior to the fatality crash, a mobile home struck a Windstream telephone wire causing it to hang lower than its required height. A commercial tractor trailer traveling southbound on US 127 was attempting to turn westbound onto CR 176 when the telephone wire became caught on the trailer.
A commercial tractor trailer travelling eastbound on CR 176 was able to communicate to the westbound driver of the issue with the telephone wire. The driver of the eastbound vehicle left his vehicle and climbed onto the trailer of the westbound vehicle in order to try and raise the wire over the trailer. A third tractor trailer, travelling southbound on US 127, struck the wire. As the third tractor trailer continued southbound, the wire decapitated the driver of the second vehicle.
