MILITARY HISTORY IN PAULDING COUNTY

Glenn Gaylord Sudlow, the son of John Harvey and Florence May (Smith) Sudlow, was born February 7, 1918, in Convoy, Union Township, Van Wert, Ohio. 

Glenn’s father, John Harvey, was born July 21, 1887 in Van Wert, Ohio. John Henry and Florence were married in 1908. John registered for the draft June 5, 1917 in Van Wert, to serve in World War 1. He passed away, September 15, 1942 in Van Wert, Ohio. Glenn’s mother, Florence May was born August 17, 1890, in Van Wert, Ohio. After John’s death, she remarried in 1952. Florence passed away, September 22, 1971, in Van Wert, Ohio. 

In 1920, the Sudlow family, John, Florence and three children were living in Union Township as a farm family in Van Wert County. By 1930 the Sudlow family had moved to Van Wert. John working as a laborer in an implement store. Glenn was in grade school in Van Wert. By 1940 the Sudlow’s had moved to Antwerp. Glenn had married a gal named Anne Belle Hoover, the daughter of Samuel L. and Flora Jeannette (Mobley) Hoover. Anne Belle was born May 12, 1922. Glenn and Anne Belle lived at 316 East Canal Street, Antwerp, Ohio, Glenn worked as a farm laborer. 

On October 16, 1940, Glenn registered for the draft in Antwerp, Ohio. Gray eyes, brown hair, light complexion, 5′-9″, 152 pounds. May 3, 1941, in Van Wert County, a daughter Shirley Ann, was born to Anne Belle and Glenn. 

On March 25, 1944, Glenn was sent to Great Lakes Training, Chicago, Illinois. Glenn served in United States Naval Reserve, on the U.S.S Hoel, Ship Number DD-533. Glenn was mustered into service September 30, 1944. Received on board, October 8, 1944. On October 26, 1944 the U.S.S. Hoel was attacked by Japanese Fleet in Samar, Philippine Islands, and the ship sank by gunfire. On December 16, 1944, a son, Glenn Michael Sudlow, was born to the now widow, Anne Belle. 

Glenn’s body was never recovered, he was listed as presumed dead. One year later, October 26, 1945, Glenn Gaylord Sudlow, was declared dead by the War Department. A burial monument was placed at Ft. McKinley, Manila, Philippines. It is called the Tablets of the Missing. A Memorial stone was placed in Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp, Ohio. 

Glenn’s brother, Karl L. Sudlow, also served in World War II. Glenn’s son also served in the Navy in Vietnam. Glenn’s wife Anne Belle, remarried, November 16, 1946, to Garner E. Jordan, a World War II Veteran and Prisoner of War. 

Another interesting fact, one other Paulding County sailor was on the U.S.S. Hoel the fateful day, October 26, 1944, Phillip Andrew Ackerman. He also perished and body never recovered.
