MILITARY HISTORY IN PAULDING COUNTY

Dorcy Wayne Waters, the son of Ray Garfield and Anna M. (Jailor) Waters, was born, May 28, 1913 in Paulding, Ohio. 

Dorcy’s father Ray G. was born July 16, 1882, in West Virginia, and was a farmer by trade. Anna M. Sailor was born, in Ohio in 1889. Roy G. Waters and Anna M. Sailor were married March 6, 1910. They moved to Carryall Township and on December 10, 1910, a daughter Zeletta Betty was born, with Dorcy to follow in 1913. A brother, Ray Glenn, was born in 1917. 

Terrible news in the Water’s household, as Dorcy’s father, Ray, dies suddenly July 16, 1918. Anna’s mother, Fannie Jailor moved into the Waters’ household. By 1920, the family moved to 301 East Canal Street. Anna’s mother, Fannie, passed away in Paulding, September 24, 1920. 

By 1930, Dorcy was a salesman working in a grocery store. By 1940, Dorcy was the only child at home, single, and working as a gas station attendant for Mutual Oil. 

On July 1, 1941, Dorcy registered for the draft. Light complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, 5′-11″, 165 Pounds. He  enlisted in the service, September 1, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio. He was serving with the 413th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, as a Top Turret Gunner, part of the B-17 Flying Fortress… this plane had eight confirmed kills. 

On May 12, 1944, while flying a bombing mission over Brux, Czechoslovakia, enemy fire took out engines number 3 and 4, the bomber went down between Kamberg and Taunus near Frankfort, Germany. He had temporary burial in Kamberg Cemetery, identification was confirmed by dog tags collected at burial site. 

Dorcy received an Air Medal with two oakleaf clusters and the Purple Heart. Final date of confirmed death established by military is May 13, 1945. His body was returned home and he is buried in Maumee Cemetery, Antwerp, Ohio. 

Dorcy’s brother Ray Glenn  passed away, October 18, 1950. Dorcy’s sister Zeletta Betty Gertrude married  a fellow named Parsons and moved to Michigan. She passed away May 31, 1976. Dorcy’s mother, Anna, passed away October 18, 1974. She is with her husband at Maumee Cemetery. Antwerp, Ohio.
