2022 State Wrestling Tournament has finally made its way back to the Schott in Columbus. Wayne Trace sent 3 wrestlers to the tournament this year. Corbin Kimmel a Freshman at 106#, Hunter Long a Senior at 132# and Jarrett Hornish at 144#.
Day one kicked off on Friday, March 11th, Kimmel wrestled Casper Caizzo from St. Paul in which Kimmel lost by a fall time of 1:28. Next Long started his state run by wrestling Jesse Maple from Ridgewood winning by major decision 16-3, rounding out the Raiders in the first round was Hornish who wrestled Jacob Richardson from South Range winning 7-0. Kimmel rounded the first day off by winning his first consolation match with a :31 second pin against Owen Martin from Southeast.
Day two started with another round of consolations where Kimmel continued his battle for the podium in which he won a 4-2 decision over C.J. Graham from Fairland securing a spot on the podium. Long started day two off with an exciting overtime match winning 11-9 over Jeremiah McKee from Wellington. Hornish followed suit with another win opening day two up with a 3:58 pin over Ayden King from Barnesville. Kimmel back on the mat in the consolation quarterfinals against Caiden Heller from Waynedale with a devastating loss in the last few seconds 0-1. In the semi finals Long took the mat first where he again had another nail biting match that went into an ultimate tie breaker with Hayden Kuhn from Ashland Crestview and Long won 6-3. Next was Hornish in the semi finals taking on Brodie Dominique from Archbold, Hornish lost a 3-8 match sending him into the consolation bracket.
Sunday morning started off with the consolation semifinals where Hornish took that mat continuing to climb the podium. Hornish wrestled Cade Petersen from Oak Harbor winning an exciting overtime match with a 7-2 victory. Next, in the placement round first up was Corbin Kimmel battling for 7th place against Hunter Newell from South Range unfortunately Kimmel lost 1-5, Kimmel took home 8th place in Division III, the first Freshman in Wayne Trace history to place at the state tournament. Hornish took the mat for one last time to complete his high school career against Clayton Smith from Utica. Hornish pinned Smith in 2:17 earning his 106th career pin. Hornish brought home a 3rd place finish for the red, white and blue. Finishing up the tournament was Hunter Long in the finals against Raymond Cmil from South Range competing for the 132# Division III State Title. Long defeated Cmil 5-2 to become the CHAMPION. Long is the third wrestler to capture a title for Wayne Trace.
For the first time in school history, Wayne Trace brought home 3 state placers resulting in a 7th place team finish.
