Roger Cash, District 25B Past District Governor, presented a New Member Orientation to the Heritage Lions club last night. He explained the Lions’ mission both for their local communities and for the world. Over 1.4 million Lions worldwide are actively working to better their communities and to help those affected by natural disasters. The motto “We Serve” is their guidepost for every project they do.
Almost 100 years ago, Helen Keller gave a speech to the Lions national leadership. In part she said: “The opportunity I bring to you, Lions, is this: To foster and sponsor the work of the American Foundation for the Blind. Will you not help me hasten the day when there shall be no preventable blindness; no little deaf, blind child untaught; no blind man or woman unaided? I appeal to you Lions, you who have your sight, your hearing, you who are strong and brave and kind. Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?” After her plea, the Lions dedicated themselves to serving the sightless and helping provide eye care all over the world. They have provided over 9 million cataract surgeries around the world and distributed many millions of eyeglasses for those in need. Eye exams for young children are conducted in schools and villages worldwide to catch sight problems early, when correction is the most possible.
After Mr. Cash’s presentation, Heritage Lions President Larry Smith led the regular monthly meeting. Plans for ice cream sales were discussed and sign-up sheets were passed around. Tom Bullerman said that Pack Away Hunger would let us use their truck to pick up any donations after the Hawks Nest garage sale on June 3-4, as well as any other donations we could secure on those dates.
Light refreshments were served following the meeting. The Heritage Lions motto is “We Serve” and we welcome anyone who wishes to help their local community to contact a Heritage Lion.
