Penny For Your Thoughts
By: Nancy Whitaker
Have you ever noticed that there is one in every crowd?
There is always the one person who either knows it all or “thinks he knows it all.” Who knows?
However, God created us and blessed all of us with some type of talent.
I think as I look back at my own life, I noticed the excellence in others talent throughout my school years, in church, in places I have worked and even serving on committees.
And yes, I know there is always someone who is bigger, better, smarter , richer, craftier and better cooks than me. Plus better looking, skinnier and taller than I am.
Even though I have been involved in music since age 5, there are better musicians than me and there is such wonderful talent in playing instruments and singing that I feel good if I can maybe just learn from those people.
I have never claimed to be a musician, but just consider myself an entertainer. My grandma taught me years ago not to brag on myself and to be humble.
Things that we excel at in life is usually something we love doing. I love to cook, write and play old fashion music.
I have learned that if I don’t like doing something I try and avoid it.
For instance, I don’t like to knit, sew or crochet. I don’t like needles, thread, yarn or patterns.
But, I do highly respect those that are good at the skill. I never really learned how to thread a sewing machine or use a crochet needle.
Years ago, my Grandma would crochet lace around pretty handkerchiefs and she would usually give them to someone as a gift. Not me! I tried to learn how to chain stitch but got bored and quit.
Some of us are good gardeners and have that special gift for growing plants and flowers. I never had a so called green thumb, but I am thankful for all the ones that can grow the fruits, vegetables, and crops today.
There is wonderful garden produce in the summer at roadside stands and Farmers Markets. And you can bet, I didn’t grow it.
Some people’s gifts lie in their attitudes. We have kind, generous ones who gives to and helps the sick and needy. There are some who love and care for the handicapped and those who have an ability to teach.
There is the talent of some to care for animals. I know a lady who takes feral cats to be neutered and gives them a home.
To me, these are natural gifts that either we are given or grow up with.
I have always said I would have never made a good pioneer lady. I can’t sew, plant, skin an animal, defeather a chicken or build a fire.
I guess I am glad to be who I am, where I am and how I am. Whether you believe it or not, our gifts, talents and attitudes makes us special and unique.
Are you a good seamstress? Can you grow flowers and gardens? What gifts and talent do you have that makes you ….. you? Let me know and I’ll Give You a Penny for Your Thoughts.
