Irl Vernon Dindot was a young man born July 21, 1893 in Delphos, Ohio. The son of John Jenkins Dindot, born December 2, 1853 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Laura (Bayman) Dindot born in 1856. This couple married in 1878.
By 1900, the Dindot family, John, Laura and ten children, Irl being the seventh child, were living in Delphos, Ohio. John was a painter. Irl was a school age child. By 1910 the Dindot family, John, Laura and six children, were living in Latty, Ohio. Irl was a farm laborer working on the family farm.
In 1912, Irl joined the Navy. He served four years and made his home in Grover Hill, Ohio. On June 2, 1917, at the East Latty precinct, Irl registered for the draft. Living in Grover Hill, he was a seasonal farmer working for a fella named George E. Starr in Grass Lake, Michigan. Irl was listed as medium height and build, hazel eyes and dark brown hair.
On December 15, 1917, Irl was stationed at Cincinnati, Ohio with the United Staes Navy Reserve Forces. On being called to active duty, December 31, 1917, lrl will be assigned to the ship, Philadelphia. He served with this ship until January 12, 1918. Then sent to serve on the ship, U.S.S. Conestoga and served until November 11, 1918. He was at sea for 331 days. Released from active duty, October 31, 1919. He also served at the Naval Demobilization Station in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Irl was honorably discharged, January 5, 1922.
By 1923, lrl had moved back home to Latty, Ohio to live with his parents and two brothers. That all changed as he met a gal named Addle Mae Yoh. The couple was married May 19, 1923 in Van Wert, Ohio by the Rev. Ira Steele, with judge Charles E. Lawhead looking on.
The happy couple moved to Washington Township. On January 7, 1925, Irl’s father John passed away. He was buried in Middle Creek Cemetery. By 1930, Irl and Addie were living in Washington Township. Addie’s mom Alice moved in with them.
On February 11, 1933, a son, James Vernon Dindot was born. In 1938, Irl’s mother, Laura, passed away and buried in Middle Creek Cemetery. Hard work and bad health caused Irl Vernon Dindot to pass away in Paulding, August 25, 1939. He too, was laid to rest in Middle Creek Cemetery. Addie never remarried and passed away in Columbus, Ohio, December 19, 1972. She was buried with her sailor in Middle Creek. As for their son, James, he graduated from Grover Hill High School and went on to become a Doctor and graduated from Ohio State University.
He joined the National Guard where he attained the rank of Captain. He passed away March 22, 1987 in Conroe, Texas. He was never married.
