MONTPELIER – In a boys-girls doubleheader Saturday, the Antwerp Archers recorded a pair of victories over host Montpelier as the blue and white posted two wins in Williams County.
In the nightcap, the Archers pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 53-41 victory over Montpelier in the boys version of the matchup.
The Lady Archers led at every stop in defeating the Lady Locomotives 43-25 earlier in the day Saturday.
The boys game saw the Locomotives take an 18-17 lead at the end of one period before Antwerp rallied to post a 27-24 advantage at the intermission. Each team scored nine points in the third quarter to give Antwerp a 36-33 margin going to the final period before the blue and white put the game away with a 17-point stanza.
Landon Brewer paced Antwerp with 19 markers in the contest and Carson Altimus added 18 points for the Archers, who improved to 13-3.
Reid Lichty finished with five points for the blue and white followed by Parker Moore (four), Zaine McMichael (four), Camden Fuller (two) and Xander Smith (one).
Antwerp’s boys junior varsity squad also was victorious, defeating the Locomotives 20-13.
Montpelier was led by Garrett Walz with 21 points and James Camper posted nine markers. Brayden Brink (four), Jamison Grime (four), Grant Girrell (two) and Chavez Martin (one) picked up the remaining points for the Locomotives, who fall to 7-10.
The afternoon matinee saw Antwerp jump out to a 13-8 lead at the end of one period and never look back.
In the second quarter, the Lady Archers picked up 13 points compared to five for Montpelier in extending the margin to 26-13 at the intermission. Antwerp then added to the lead in the third quarter, outscoring Montpelier 10-3 to widen the gap to 36-16 entering the final period.
Aewyn McMichael topped all scorers in the contest with 16 points for Antwerp to lead three players in double figures as the Lady Archers raised their record to 9-8 on the season.
Caroline Rohrs chipped in 13 points for the blue and white with Hayleigh Jewell recording a dozen markers. Lydia Krouse also had a pair of free throws for Antwerp.
Jada Uribes paced the Lady Locomotives, who fall to 9-10 on the year, with 11 points and Aleigha Hillard finished with six markers. Meara McGee and Mandy Taylor both totaled four points for Montpelier.
